Does anybody make there own Laundry soap and use it in an HE washer. I would like to try to do this but I am scared to ruin my washer. TIA

Re: Homemade Laundry soap in an HE washer

  • I've read a discussion about this somewhere online, and the gist of it was don't.  I don't remember the specifics (sorry) just that it would likely ruin my lovely washer.

  • Sorry I don't have an answer for you but if you post this over on Green Living, you might get some more ladies to help you out.  The ladies over there love to make their own soap.

I would worry about ruining your machine with the wrong soap- but if I remember correctly, don't quote me on this and check with GL first, the homemade soaps sud less and that is what kills the machine.  So I guess, you might be able to use homemade soap in your HE machine.

  • Don't know what it would do to your machine, but if you have a warranty on the washer, your warranty would most likely be voided because you did not follow directions.
  • One of the things service technicians will tell you is that regular washing detergent (non H.E. detergent) will ruin your washer because of the excessive suds. The homemade version barely suds. I've used it with no problems as have many others. In the research I've done online trying to find recipes, I've never come across anyone saying that it has done damage.
  • As pp have said regular detergent us bad for front loaders/HE machines because of the sudsing. Home made soap doesn't suds as much. We bought a new front loader in March and I have been using homemade detergent in it since day 1 and have not had a problem. I use 1/2 of what I would in a regular washer. Every month (or so) I run a hot water/vinegar cycle (with no clothes) to clean out any residue. I researched it before hand because I didn't want to ruin my brand-new washer...
