I don't know how to handle this.
I don't have a boss. There is another guy here who has a manager title and he and I are basically the ones running the office. We just let each other know if we need to leave early/are taking a vacation day/whatever. Its not as though I need his permission to take a day off, I just need to let someone know. He's been here longer than me.
Yesterday he came in and said 'okay we need to do your review.' I said okay and he showed me the blank paper he's supposed to fill out. I told him it was supposed to filled out. He said yeah he's going to do that after. I said okay and then we just looked at each for a minute until he said okay, thats done. (uhh wtf?) Then he told me that the owner has already decided on raises/bonuses so reviews are kind of pointless. True, but still.
Right before I got married there were a bunch of changes here. I had parts of a managers job handed to me, I've started speaking to the owner directly instead of through someone, and I have a huge list of changes that are going to occur in 2011 (that I came up with) that will improve the company. The owner knows about all of this stuff, but I don't know whether he knows these were my ideas or what I've really done or not.
It bothers me that no one else knows how to do my job or even the amount of detail that goes into it (they think "bill comes in. Nichole pay bill. Check come in. Nichole take check to bank.) and I wasn't even able to explain in detail what I do. I also feel like if I did get a raise then its based on what someone elses interpretation of my job is. How can they determine that?
I don't really want to go to the guy who gave me the "review" because I don't know how he is conveying things to the owner. I don't know when I should go to the owner either. Do I tell him before that I would like an in-detail review with him? He's in another state. It's not going to happen before 2011. And if so, how do I tell him I'd rather have him do the review than other guy? And if I was to get a raise and I wait until after, then I just come across as looking greedy. Halp me!
This may be a bit of a post & run, I have a meeting at 10:30.
Re: job related question, help (long)
I know how you feel. In my job I do EVERYTHING. When I was out for a week for the HM I came back and everything was so screwed up. If and when I leave my job they will have a tough time figuring out how to do the day to day things. When our GM quit last year, parts of her job were given to me to do. We hired a bookeeper and since we're paying her too much, some of those tasks were given to me. My load just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
I'm not sure what advice to give you. If it were me I would send the owner an email and let him know exactly what it is that you do. Also, every time you have an idea send it via email and cc the owner so he knows it was your idea. I do this every time I have a good idea or when a customer email's me saying that I rock. I don't think it looks like you're being greedy.
It is not uncommon for people to write their own reviews then have a supervisor sign off on it.
I would say something like...hey dude, since you're not really my supervisor I'd like to fill out the details myself and then have (insert owner/supervisor/guy who signs your checks's name here) sign off on it.
That's what I would do anyway. That way you get to put all your accomplishments directly in front of the people who matter.

I agree with Alicia. I would just directly ask the owner who should do your review while subtly hinting that you would like him to. Something like, "Hey, so I know review time is coming up and since I don't have a direct supervisor, I was wondering if you'll be doing my review. Should I write up a summary of my accomplishments for the year for you to look over?" That way comes off as if you're looking for clarification on the process rather than a money-hungry jerk. :-)
Then if he comes back and says other guy who already did your "review" was supposed to do it, you can ask for more clarification of the process and at least ask to write your own summary of accomplishments and just have other guy sign off on it.
Ironically the situation ended up resolving itself. I had a call with the owner today, completely unrelated and in the middle of a completely different conversation he said "oh yeah Nichole, remind me that we need to do your review over the phone before the end of the year."
But I definitely like the idea of writing up the stuff I've done and plan to do. I think I'll work on that tomorrow.
