another baby skin question

Shuga's post below made me think I should ask this here.  Gaby has a red rash under her chin and on her neck from spit up and drool presumably.  Any thoughts on anything I could put on to help dry it up?  Her pediatrician had the brilliant idea that it was dry skin and I should put moisturizer, but thats definitely not going to help since it's moisture that's caused it.  I've tried some grandma el's ointment, which is what we use for her bum (and it works great there) but that doesn't really seem to make much difference.  any ideas?

Re: another baby skin question

  • I'd probably put some Aquaphor on that one, too.  Aquaphor for everything!  LOL!

Seriously, just because it's wet doesn't mean it isn't dry skin.  It's the same thing with licking your lips when they're dry -- it temporarily makes the surface wet but doesn't help the underlying dry skin problem.  A layer of Aquaphor (which is about 50% petroleum jelly) will make a barrier to prevent further moisture loss and irritation from the drool.

  • I was paranoid of her having issues under her chin from formula and drool, so I was constantly wiping her dry.  And I made sure to wash under chin every night during her bath too.

  • Not a mamma yet, but my thought was Bag Balm.  Something like that would create a barrier against the bad moisture, while healing and moisturizing the skin at the same time.
  • good ideas, i'll give these a try!

  • Yes on the Aquaphor for that, too!  :)  I love the stuff.  DH was washing bottles tonight and his hands were so itchy after because his hands were dry and then the water irritated them.  I gave him some Aquaphor he was in heaven.  He was like "What is this stuff!?!?!?!"
