Tips for navigating the EI system?
DH is temporarily laid off as of today. We were expecting it so we've adjusted the budget and everything. But any tips for applying for EI or how to work our way through the system?
Neither of us has ever been on EI before and, as a natural worrier/planner - I need to know what to expect so I don't worry.
Re: Tips for navigating the EI system?
I work in payroll and have to deal with EI/Service Canada all the time and here is what I have learnt:
Apply today or trmw even if his company has not completed his record of employment yet. It takes 4-6 weeks to get your first cheque typically.
Make sure your EI is being taxed appropiately. Service Canada tends to under tax your earnings so when tax time comes you owe money. Google PDOC and enter in your information and gross earnings once you get your first cheque to make sure enough taxes are coming off.
Make use of their online website. servicecanada.ca
If your husband recieves any earnings during the time he is on EI make sure he reports it to EI. I have seen them go back to people for money they earning 5 years ago on EI.
Thanks! I don't think the system lets him apply until he's been off work for 7 days though. He ran into some sort of problem.
We can afford to wait for the cheque, we have a good emergency fund and a lot of discretionary expenses we can cut out. Looks like we won't be going on a surprise vacation early in the new year though. I guess I misspoke below, it's only a need when both of us are actually working
I was off this summer and used the online system.
One problem I had was that I received a good severance package ($) from the company that laid me off. I filled out the form every week/every 2 weeks online and was phoned once at the beginning by someone from EI service just to get some more information.
I never received a cheque because I got a job before my severance was set to run out. As long as you're honest and remember to fill everything out all the time, your H should be fine.
