poll: what do you spend on gifts for FI/DH/SO

After hearing a coworker talk about what she was getting her FI and what she had seen that he had gotten her (through their bank account) I was a little shocked at what they were spending. But maybe that's just me.

Re: poll: what do you spend on gifts for FI/DH/SO

  • Last year we didn't exchange because of the financial situation. This year we're weaning back into it and buying something small for the other to open. We're more spoiling the kids this year because last year they didn't get much.
  • Normally we spend about $100, this year I am going to be spending about $150, he is buying me a laptop which is obviously a lot more.
  • I voted for combined gift this year. We bought a new camera a couple weeks ago and after the holidays we need to buy a couch and t.v for the upstairs living area. This year we figured we'd spend the money on things we want/need to get done before little man arrives, and save what we can for expenses once he does arrive.

I'd guess in past years we spent around $200 on each other. DH always gets the shaft in gifts though since his birthday is early January, but the man seriously never wants anything. And if he does, he tends to buy it for himself!

  • We kind of base it year by year depending on financial situation.  This year we went a little higher.  I think it's around $125 this year for his.  And since he can't keep a secret to save his life, I know what I am getting and it's about the same.
  • Since getting married we've taken the lame stance of "we'd basically be buying ourselves gifts" and don't exchange gifts. Now with the kids, we'd much rather spend the money on them anyway.

But, if our financial situation ever gets better, we may change our views. We don't do gifts for Valentine's day, or for our birthday's either.

  • We went spendy this year his gift was about $150 and my gift from him was about $200.  We also got each other a few little things that are actually surprises...since I ordered my own gift and told him what I was considering getting him he was ok with that..

I don't like surprises like people do and I love knowing what I am getting so we really don't have many secret gifts...we're going dogsledding in January for our anniversary gift to each other last October.

  • I usually spend about $300ish on him plus another $100 or so for his birthday but this year i'm at $540 and I still need to get 2 more things.

That said, he usually spends around $800 on me (guestimate!) PLUS he has paid for our Mexico trip out of "his" money both last year and this so that's really a gift too. The man really likes to buy gifts, what can i say?

We spend a lot at Christmas, around $50-75 on each person we buy for.

  • We figured we spent enough money on ourselves this fall....D has been getting into coin collecting, and I am paying for skating lessons....plus, we just bought fireplace doors for the living room fireplace.  We decided we don't need to spend anything on ourselves - we're giving others gifts instead.
  • We used to be over the top with each other during Christmas but since we bought our house 5 years ago we scaled back a lot. The past 3 years now we have forgone getting each other anything for Christmas and go on vacation in February instead (which is the perfect gift in my opinion)

  • I love buying stuff for DH and surprising him, he loves to do it for me as well.  This year we spent more than we have in years past- for a variety of reasons- 5 year anniversary on 12/30 and both of our graduations.

  • I chose $50-100 because that's what we typically do, but this year we're putting the money towards our trip to Italy.  I'm hoping we can find some joint something more often than not, because I HATE shopping for DH.
  • We used to spend maybe $150 for each person's birthday which is like 3 weeks before/after Christmas, and not do Xmas gifts.

Since kids and career changes, we don't do Xmas or Bday gifts.  We've never done Valentines day.

There is something about having no financial worries and great income, to having nothing to make you re-prioritize what you really want.  Now it is very hard for me to spend money because I literally don't know what I really want.  My Gap Groupon mass underwear purchase was probably the dorkiest, most exciting gift I've had in years because I'm happy every day wearing them  :P

  • This is our first year we aren't exchanging gifts. I just went to Town Hall Brewery and got him a couple growlers of beer because that's his favorite beer, but we just decided we'd so much rather get an overnight babysitter in a month or two when DS is sleeping better and get a hotel room someplace local and do a nice dinner.

did that a few years ago, went to Pazzaluna and stayed at the St Paul Hotel and we still talk about how much fun we had. To me that's so much more worth it, and anything I want, I'll usually go out and buy myself.

  • We generally do a joint gift to ourselves.  This year, it is our pricey rescue dog.
  • We're putting most of our money into our kitchen this year but did get each other a $50-ish gift.  We opened gifts tonight with my family and DH got me a beautiful Banana Republic sweater and a B&N gift card so I can put books on the Nook I got from my parents.  :-)  Yay Christmas! :-)
