Romegrot

Such an awful name for such a wonderful food. It really does sound like something that you should use in your bathroom to lay tile, but the smell and taste is next to Heaven. There are of course MANY recipes for this and mine is completely different than my Moms. I *believe* this one came from my Grandma Minnie. I will also warn a newbie to Scandinavian Foods, this is a love it or hate it food. My Mom, my sister and I LOVE it. My Dad stands firm on my comment about the bathroom tiles.

I made this last night for Christmas in Mayville tonight and it turned out great once again :)  It was a great little bedtime treat!

Re: Romegrot

  • I've had some poorly made romegrot before and it WAS pretty close to something you'd use to tile a floor.  Ick!    When it is made well it is pretty tasty with some cinnamon and sugar on top!

  • Oh I know!  Some recipes are milk and flour and that's it!  But trust me, mine is good!  My family and DH's family request it every year.  But once you get a taste of a bad one, it's hard to want to try a good one!

  • Chalk me up to being one of the ones on the hate it camp...that and Lutefisk are my anti Scandinavian traditions...Romegrot just doesn't even look good to me, and Lutefisk...well nothing should need that much melted butter over the top of it to stomach...
  • I'm in the anti-lutefisk category too!  My Dad hates it so much that when Mom used to make it when we were kids, he would take all of us out to pizza.  :)

  • I actually don't mind lutefisk, if it's made a certain way. But I've never had rommegrot I've liked. My grandma doesn't even like it, but she used to make it anyway just because we're of Norwegian heritage so we should eat rommegrot. It's sad to say, but there's a tiny blessing in the fact that she's not able to cook for herself anymore ... no more rommegrot!

  • God, I hate rommegrot. I know my family's recipe is supposed to be great (apparently it was brought over on the boat with an older relative) but I can't stand the stuff. It tastes like hot paste with butter, nutmeg & cinnamon.

I hate lutefisk, too, but oddly, I have very strong opinions how it needs to be eaten if one is going to eat it.

I love lefse, but I will only eat it with butter & brown sugar. Has to be brown.
