Good Afternoon, Ladies.... I am not from Hawaii but my partner and I are looking into moving to Hawaii. We have been researching online and such. We are both ready for change of atmosphere and change in climates. : )
I wanted to reach out and ask for any imput anyone would be willing to offer. I have a few questions to start this subject off.....If any of the questions are too personal, feel free to not answer them. Any imput is greatly appreciated.
~Did anyone move from mainland to Hawaii....? If so, where from and why...?
~Did you move your pets with you? If so, do you have any information or a direction you can point me in.
~Which Island do you live on.....?
~Is there an island that you would suggest or not suggest to reside on?
~if you moved from the mainland to Hawaii, how often do you see relatives/friends if you had some.
My partner and I don't have much family where we are currently living and his father is thinking of moving there as well because his brother already lives in Hawaii. We are not running away from anything or trying to escape from reality. We are both looking to reside in a place where we would enjoy waking up each day and a fresh start on life.
Thanks for any and all of your time and input on this topic.

I was born and raised here but lived on the mainland for about 8 years before moving back. Depending on where you are moving from, be ready for sticker shock! Even though I grew up here and lived in Seattle (which has a relatively high cost of living), I was still somewhat shocked by prices when I moved back. Despite that, I love being back with family...something I missed while I was on the mainland.
I got a dog when I was on the mainland and had to go through the whole quarantine process when I moved back. It is fairly complicated, so do your research (at the link posted above) and start EARLY! To get direct release (where the pet doesn't need to stay in quarantine), it is about a 6 month process -- if everything goes smoothly -- and everything needs to be timed well. President Obama just went through the process to allow Bo to come with him during his holiday visit.
I live on Oahu, but each island has it's own personality, so you'll need to find the one that fits you best. If you can afford the time and cost, I'd suggest visiting before deciding. As mentioned above, Oahu is the most populated, the most urban, and has the most jobs (along with traffic). The other islands are a little slower-paced.
Good luck in your decision and welcome to the board!
Oh I should probably add - if you move here and ship your stuff, it will be very expensive! I moved the last of my things from my parents house in California this summer, and for like 9 big moving boxes of stuff it cost me $1k to get it shipped by boat (it was heavy, otherwise I would have mailed it). And I thought I didn't have a lot of things! To get a shipping container with Matson it's like $2k-$4k depending on the size and everything, so you'd definitely have to figure in the cost of moving. It may be easier to just sell everything you can and buy again later.
Thanks to everyone for reaching out and taking the time to respond. It has been a great help. We are actually planning a trip out to probably Oahu in the next few months to get a feel for it. From the sounds of it, sounds more like my pace of living, i wouldnt know what to do if it was much slower than I need.
We currently live in Baltimore, Maryland and look forward to out visit and meeting to new friends and such.
hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday and I look forward to chatting with you ladies more!
