Christmas Dessert

I'm making dessert for Christmas dinner with my ILs.  It needs to serve 8, one of which is a teenage boy.  None of my ILs are particularly adventurous with food.  It also needs to be something I can at least mostly make the day before, as we will be at my parents' in the morning, with no time to stop and bake stuff.  If it's a cake, I'm not opposed to frosting it at the ILs.

I'm thinking a chocolate cake (because I have a fantastic recipe) with chocolate frosting.  Or should it be white frosting?  I don't know!

Any other suggestions?

Re: Christmas Dessert

  • Cake is easy, it travels well, you can make it a day ahead. A fruit or custard pie would get all wet on the bottom if it sat around for a day, so if you went the pie route you should make it ahead but not bake it until you get to the in-laws. Besides, fresh pie is better isn't it?

For the teen boy part- I would make whatever. Even something doused in brandy. One sip at Christmas won't kill him. Besides, legal drinking age in Europe is 16. You are just being Euro. Wink

  • Oh! I was just thinking!

If you have various layer sizes, or know someone who has one or two you can borrow.....

make the bottom cake layer like 10", the next 8", the next 6", and then finish with a cup cake. Frost in green, pulling up on the frosting so it's rough and not smooth. It's kinda step-pyramidy but close enough to be considered a Christmas tree. Decorate with little round candies, put a cut out star on top of the cupcake. You can even get really clever and cut the knots off candy necklaces so they are candy chains, and put them around like tinsel.

Easy enough to do, but looks like you went all out.

  • I totally want to do that now, Tupp!

  • Sorry Tupp, but that's way too complicated for me.  I might go as fancy as putting sprinkles on the cake, just to be festive.

I was thinking of making it a chocolate stout cake, which is outstanding, but I don't know if I want to deal with MIL and FIL questioning why I would put beer in a cake.
