Smoke smell

Any tips for cleaning walls/surfaces/floors in a vacant home where the previous owners were smokers? Obviously, we'll be painting, but is there any magic formula for cleaning smoke smell pre-paint??

Re: Smoke smell

  • I don't think there's any magic formula...

Use Kilz primer on all painted surfaces (walls, ceilings, trim, casings, doors) and then paint to your desired color.

Wash all hard surface floors (wood, laminate, tile, vinyl, etc) with a vinegar/water solution. 1 part vinegar to 5 parts water is usually sufficient.

Have all carpeted floors cleaned or replaced. I don't have any carpet in my house so I don't know what works best for cleaning carpet.

You should look into having your duct work cleaned out too. Any dust, lint and hair stuck in the duct work will allow the smoke smell to absorb in. You'll smell the smoke afresh every.single.time the heat and a/c turn on.

  • we used kilz on our walls, and repainted, it helped a ton! Also, we redid all the floors, by either pulling up laminate and replacing or cleaning wood floors. Vinegar and water solution helps some. We also left out a bowl of vinegar to "soak" up the odor. Hope that helps!
