bored - can't focus... time to go home?

OK ladies - I can't be the only one sitting at work with serious "I want to get out of here I have a zillion things to do" syndrome...

 How about a poll

1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition?

2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition?

3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations?

4.  Favorite holiday food?

5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why?

6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year?

Re: bored - can't focus... time to go home?

  • 1.  Least favorite holiday tradition - spending new years day with my in laws.  I just don't like that extended family enough to spend that much time with them within a week.

    2.  My most favorite tradition is going to the candle light service at Church on Christmas Eve.  It is always so beautiful.

    3.  This year is easy - we didn't decorate!  Most of the time, they stay up until the week after new years though and then all gets packed away.  This year, we just ran out of time and had other issues to deal with (we had a huge ice dam on our roof  that developed after we got 2 feet of snow so it was raining in our living room.  Not fun)

    4.  Favorite holiday food  - good ham and cheesy potato casserole.  oh how I love cheesy potato casserole.

    5.   My Mom's folks divided up their ornaments when they moved to assisted living and gave a small segment of them to each of their children and grandchildren.  Most of them are hand made and very much from the era where you made do with what you had.  I love having that type of history on hand.  There are a couple that are old thread spools with ribbon that are actually really pretty!

    6.  We did a lot of gift card shopping this year - people didn't have many ideas this year for some reason.  However, my sisters and I got my Dad a new bird feeder for their cabin because the one they have has had a few too many run ins with bears and is basically trashed.  This new one has a battery powered rotating platform so if a squirrel jumps on it, it spins until they jump off or let go.  I'm kinda giddy about seeing it in action.  The squirrels up there are NOT underfed and need an intervention.  Stick out tongue

  • 1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition? everyone eating hams :(2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition? Doing secret santa with extended family the night before christmas3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations? till new years day4.  Favorite holiday food? Green bean casserole or stuffing5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why? we get new ornaments for our trees once every 2 years practically...we dont have the "sentimental" ornaments in my family for some reason...I have a black and white marilyn monroe tree, so any of those marilyn monroe ornaments r my fav6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year? i bought my husband a big tv :) my stepdad is getting a bo-flex (spelling?)

  • 1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition? I can't think of anything!

    2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition? Ordering pizza on Christmas day.  We don't celebrate Christmas but still get together for my mom's b-day; so, it's simple.  My family has done this for as long as I can remember.  This year, we're actually cooking though :(

    3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations? We have winter decorations of pinecones and glittery balls that will probably stay out until February.

    4.  Favorite holiday food? tamales and ponche

    5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why? n/a

    6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year? n/a

    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • 1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition? I don't think there's anything I DON'T like about Christmas, but ranking lowest on the list is the church's Christmas pageant.  Sure it's cute, but it's crowded, noisy, and a bit of a zoo.

    2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition? The annual Christmas Eve party with most of our family and friends.  I look forward to this all year.

    3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations? This is our first year decorating our own apartment, so I'm thinking we'll leave things out until New Years or some time around then.

    4.  Favorite holiday food? Gingerbread anything!

    5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why? I have a pair of glass ornaments made by a Polish company of a king and a princess.  I love that they're bright and beautiful and I love that they represent both my past (Polish heritage) and present (we bought them with my grandparents in their current location, Santa Fe).

    6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year? This isn't something I purchased, but the gift I'm most proud of are the socks I made DH this year:

  • I'm in the same boat as you!  I've been at work two hours and am SO ready to go home already!  :o

    1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition?  I don't have one!  I LOVE this season!

    2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition?  Used to be my parents' Christmas Eve party... after church, whatever friends and family that are free come over and bring whatever random sweets/snacks they have at their house and we just hang out and play games until LATE.  All of my friends that used to come are now married and involved with their new families on Christmas Eve and DH has Christmas Eve traditions with his family which means we only get their at the end.  Nothing has replaced that as a favorite yet.

    3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations?  It depends how late we get decorations up.  Last year we were late with decorating so I left them up until the middle of January.  I start directing a musical the second weekend in January so I'll probably be taking everything down New Year's Day.

    4.  Favorite holiday food?  My mom's Creme de Menthe squares... I could eat a whole pan.  They are just full of fat and sugar and mint and SO GOOD.

    5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why?  I have a really pretty glass dancer that looks beautiful with Christmas lights behind it.  I got it from my BFF's little sister the year BFF left for college because I was hanging out with them alot.

    6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year?  Bought my SIL a locket off etsy that is so pretty I wanted to keep it.  Smile

  • 1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition?  Can't think of anything- I love the Christmas season!

    2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition?  Well, it used to be Christmas Eve at my grandma's house, up until she passed away in 2002.  She had to be at both the 7:00 and 11:00 pm services at church, so we would have a TON of appetizer type foods for dinner and hang out at their house.  Then we'd all go to the 11:00 pm candlelight service together.  For some reason Christmas Eve just seemed magical as a kid.  Nothing has really replaced that, but the last couple years my mom and I have had a cookie/candy making extravaganza and that has been a blast Big Smile  We get tired and giddy and usually break down into fits of crying laughter.

    3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations?  Usually around New Year's/first week of January

    4.  Favorite holiday food?  Little smokies! (little sausages in BBQ sauce). And Christmas cookies.

    5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why?  Several years ago my mom gave me a Swarovski crystal snowflake. It's gorgeous and I love the way the lights reflects off of it. Also, my grandma used to give me Swarovski crystal animal figurines, so it reminds me of her.

    6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year?  My stepdad has a Southwest style home (we live near St. Louis) that he's decorated with a mish-mash of Mexican, Southwest, and Native American decor.  DH and I found this really pretty hand-painted ceramic sun at a Native American store when we were in Wichita over Thanksgiving.  It has a face on it and has cobalt blue, green, gold, and burgundy on it and it matches his kitchen perfectly.  I'm super excited about it!
  • 1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition?  I wouldn't call it a tradition but doing Christmas at my MIL's is a bit painful. She just dosen't "know" us and this year she had a new audience to entertain and she was just on. It's hard to be around her when you know 90% of what she says is untrue.

    2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition?  I just love going to my parents house on Christmas Eve. It's always very busy and the food is good and the drinks are good. We just laugh and watch a Christmas movie in the background and listen to Christmas music.

    3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations? In Newfoundland it's traditional to take your things down on old Christmas Day which is January 7th.

    4.  Favorite holiday food?  Pickled eggs (I know, gross), turkey and my moms marshmellow snowballs.

    5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why?  Our tree is such a mash of things we love. But I guess my favorites are the ones I get at a craft fair every year. They have my and the Mr's name on them and we have one for every year we've been together. Last year I got one back dated to 2001 which is the year we started dating.

    6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year? I bought my dad tickets to a show he really wants to see, I think he'll be excited about that. And I got my mom a streched canvas print of a photo I took the last time I was in Newfoundland. It's of the battery. This is not my photo but it gives you an idea of what it's of.

  • I am in the same boat! I can't wait to get home and start enjoying the long holiday weekend with DH :)

    1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition?
I really truly can't think of anything! Maybe the stress and pressure of finding the perfect gift for people who are difficult to shop for?

    2. What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition?
So many "traditions" have changed for me after I moved out of my parents' and in with DH, so it's hard to say. Right now it's a tie now between...

spending Christmas Eve with DH: I make a nice dinner, we exchange our gifts, and then drink wine and watch Christmas movies. It's so wonderful to spend a nice, quiet night together before the semi-chaos of splitting Christmas Day with our two families.

and... decorating the tree at my parents house with my brother and sister: It's so cool to remember doing it through the years, back to when we were little and it would take hours, to now when they're both home from college and we're making stupid jokes and listening to Jimmy Buffett's Christmas album.

    3. How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations?
Usually until the weekend after New Years.

    4. Favorite holiday food?
We don't have it at Christmas, so it's a strictly Thanksgiving food, but stuffing!

    5. Favorite holiday ornament and why? Hm... we don't really have anything too sentimental, so I'm going to have to go on pure looks- anything clear or crystal-like that catches the light and sparkles.

    6. Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year?
I don't know if I can call it the "best" but I got my dad a Phillies garden gnome. He is a huge Phillies fan, loves his vegetable garden, and has a goofy sense of humor. I got a huge kick out of it, and I hope he does too!

    HAHA!  I love it!

  • 1. I dont really have one. Now that lil man is older we are starting all new traditions with him.

    2. Every Christmas Eve, all the family gets together (both mine and the in laws) and we all relax and have a great time. All the grandkids usually open up their presents from the grandparents.

    3. We keep our stuff up until the weekend after New Years. Everything will come down on Jan 8.

    4. All the homemade desserts. I love all the stuff that my mom makes.

    5. I would have to say the teddy bear in a swing. That was mine from when I was a baby. It was on my moms tree until we got our tree now its on mine.

    6. It would have to be the autographed hat that we got my mom. They are signed by some NASCAR drivers.

  • 1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition? We used to go to my stepdad's family's house...I hated it because I didn't know anyone. Luckily, when I moved out I didn't have to go there anymore. And actually my parents do go anymore either because of drama.

    2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition? There are so many! I guess just our normal routine. We go to my grandma's xmas eve night and have yummy pizza, pierogies, meatballs, just random food. Then Christmas morning we go to my parents and my mom makes an awesome brunch. We eat and then open presents. Then we eat all day and watch movies. After, DH and I come home and we do our Christmas with wine and candles...we try to be romantic!

    3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations? I used to keep them out till after the New Year...sometimes longer. Now I usually take it down before New Years when I am off of work.

    4.  Favorite holiday food? EVERYTHING

    5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why? DH got me a locket ornament that is a heart and it says Our First Christmas. He put a picture of our wedding day and had it engraved with our last name. It was just so thoughtful. I love it!

    6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year?DH is getting a remote car starter

    LOVE IT!

  • 1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition? Christmas Eve at the ILs.

    2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition? Christmas morning breakfast! We go all out and squeeze fresh orange juice, make quiche and loads of bacon - basically too much food for 2 people.

    3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations? The past 2 years, we have ripped them down the day after.

    4.  Favorite holiday food? Stuffing!

    5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why? I have a lot. My grandmother bought me a personalized rocking horse ornament every year since I was born, so those mean a lot to me. She's the best.

    6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year? This sounds really lame, but I got my dad a set of Legos. He is totally a kid at heart, and not a dad that will use a tie or a pair of Dockers. He will LOVE them.

  • 1. What is your LEAST favorite holiday tradition?   Bell ringers.  I know, it's the season of giving, but I HATE the bell ringing!  Also, I use a credit card at the grocery store, so I don't have change to give you.  They need to re-examine their business model.2.  What is your MOST favorite holiday tradition?I can't pick!
-- I really love the gift exchange between DH and I... his are the best because he knows me so well.  He knows what I want even if I don't say it, and he knows what I NEED too. :)
-- I also love the movies... mostly The Grinch (both versions) and Christmas Vacation.
-- For years, my sister and I have "marked" the beginning of Christmas by blowing these 2 small brass horns that our mom puts up as decoration.  It's kind of gross if I think about it, but we do it every year. 3.  How long after Christmas (for those of us that celebrate it) do you leave out your decorations?
Only a week or so... it usually comes down over New Years.  It might be later this year though, because we'll be at a wedding all of New Years Eve weekend.4.  Favorite holiday food?Kangs.  It's a long story, but this is what my family calls those cookies that are Ritz crackers with peanut butter in between, dipped in chocolate.  I also love it when there's veggies/dip, chips/salsa, and deli sandwich stuff... I could eat that stuff 6 days a week. :) 5.  Favorite holiday ornament and why? Our tree topper is a parrot on a branch with a santa hat on.  I don't remember where we got it, but we never had a real topper and this is our largest ornament, so it became our topper.  DH is a big Jimmy Buffett fan too, so it fits.  Jimmy's birthday is also on Dec. 25th, so it's our little "parrot head" tribute to him too.  I'm sure that would offend super religious people, but that's okay with me, I think it's cute!6.  Best Christmas gift you purchased for someone this year? I got DH some really close tickets to a Blues/Blackhawks hockey game next week.  He's a Blackhawk fan, but we live in St. Louis, so they only come here a few times each year and tickets are expensive. :(  I got him a couple new Blackhawk shirts too, and by the time he opened those, he said, "oh, well this one must be tickets to a game then."  Geez, way to ruin Christmas!  I think he liked it anyway. We also got my mom and DH's mom calendars on Shutterfly, personalized with family pictures.  I even put pictures on everyone's birth date and anniversary date.  We just started it for DH's mom last year and she loved it and requested it again this year.  My mom's first one is this year, so I hope she likes it as much.  It takes a lot of time, but it's a easy gift, so I hope it continues each year!
