Where are you celebrating the holiday?
DH and I just decided to invite family over for Christmas Eve. His family tradition had always been with his grandmother, who passed away this spring. So we are trying to begin a tradition of having family come to our place. We are just doing appetizers and drinks, we are keeping it relaxed. But I am excited to have everyone over!
Christmas Day, we will go to the ILs and celebrate as we have for years. We open presents, drink mimosas and eat breakfast, and snack much of the day. Some people come and go. It is pretty relaxed too. We may even go to the movies in the evening.
So, what is your plan?
Re: Where are you celebrating the holiday?
Christmas eve we always watch It's a Wonderful Life and then go to midnight mass. Christmas morning Chris and I will open gifts with his mom. Then we'll drive down to CT and spend the day/night with his mom's family - presents, dinner, etc.
The day after Christmas we're going to go spend the day with Chris' dad.
I can't wait until we're able to start hosting holidays.
This is why we decided to do Christmas Eve! It does not change plans too much, but still lets us start a new tradition that includes both families!
That's really nice! If/when we move (back to GA) both families would have significant travelling to do to come to us. So if we did host, we'd be hosting for the whole shebang! I think Thanksgiving would be a good holiday to start with....then once we have kids I'm sure the grandparents would want to make a trip out to see the kiddos.
Mel, that's exciting that you get to host. Hope you guys have fun!
I think our plans are to go to the ILs on Thursday to have dinner and open presents with his family. Then we will do the same with my family on Friday, Christmas Eve. Saturday, Christmas Day, we actually have no plans! I guess maybe we will have our own tiny Christmas with each other and just have a nice relaxed day. I can't wait til the start of things Thursday
Christmas Eve is just DH and I. Dinner and church. Christmas morning we will open gifts together, then we are headed to my grandma's. My WHOLE family is there (grandma, her 4 kids + their spouses, 14 grandkids, 11 spouses of the grandkids, and 17 great grandkids.) My fam has done it every year since I was born. This will likely be the last year grandma will be in the house. By next year she will almost positively be in a nursing home. So next year may change....
On Monday, my mom, dad, 2 brothers and SIL are coming to our place. My older brother and SIL live 5 minutes from us, so it made more since for mom, dad, and little bro to drive the 80 miles here.
I think we are heading to DH's on Thurs before New Years and staying through the weekend. We'll do Christmas with them then.
This year we're running up on Christmas Eve to see his parents for a few hours. Christmas day we'll spend the morning opening gifts with the kids...then my mom and my brother are coming over in the afternoon.
I do a pretty big dinner, not quite as intense as Thanksgiving, but we do it up!
We are styaing home and working on merging family traditions. Christmas Eve it will be just us, making pierogi and going to midnight mass. Christmas Day, just us, hanging out and making Christmas lunch.
The 26th, my IL are coming to visit (since I'm still not allowed to travel for a bit) though usually, if I were well, we'd go to PA see my grandma, aunts, uncles, etc. My parents are going to be working all week the next week, and my sister had a basketball tournament, so we are going to spend New Years with them in NJ and do Christmas with them and my siblings (all still live at home).
This year is really weird, and I'm kind of upset that I don't get to see my parents until NYE (we don't see them a lot because they still have 2 very involved teenagers and live 5 hours away), but oh well, that's what I get. Hopefully next year we will have a better plan.
Christmas eve DH and I are going to mass, then my Dad's side of the family's celebration, then probably driving around to look at Christmas lights. Ending the night with some Christmas cookies, hot chocolate, and It's a Wonderful Life sounds good right now.
Christmas day is with my Mom's side of the family at my parent's house. We'll probably open up gifts and stuff at our own place before we head over. I'm planning on taking it easy and figuring out what traditions of our own pop up without even thinking about it. Although, next year we'll be with DH's family in South Carolina, so it might make carrying on traditions more difficult because we'll be doing whatever they do.
my read shelf:
Christmas Eve has pretty much always been me and my parents, I think maybe we used to go over to my grandma's at one point.
So the four of us will be having dinner as usual.
Christmas morning we get up and the four of us will open gifts.
Then we go to my aunt's house which we've always done, and have brunch there and presents.
Then we go to my cousin's house for dinner.
We are going to my aunt's (dad's side) on Christmas Eve and my cousin's (mom's side) on Christmas. We alternate holidays with families to we are doing Christmas with my fam this year. I can't wait as I spent Christmas at my in laws or soon to be in laws at the time, last year.
Christmas Eve I will be spending time at my favorite place in the world. Work. It will be fun though, i love spending time with all 100 of my grandma's and grandpa's.
Christmas Day, work changed it so I had it off, i will be at home with my two boys. I will be in the kitchen most of the day, i'm sure H will be on the computer and the boy will be getting into everything.
Christmas Eve we are going to my brother's house for dinner, then mass at some point. We will probably crash my cousin's party for a little bit, just to say hello (we would need to rent a hall in order to have Christmas all together... ).Then come home (well, home to my mom's house) and finish wrapping presents. This will be the first year in about 10-12 years that I haven't stayed at a siblings house (since waking up with little kids is really fun!)
Christmas we are staying here at my mom's. I plan on making some sinfully delicious pancakes and just enjoying being here with my husband and my mom, and probably one of my brothers. Everyone (the three siblings that are married with kids) usually comes over in the morning (before noon), then heads to their in-laws from noon-4 or so, then comes back here. We will have dinner, way too much dessert, and then some of my cousins will stop by.
And then we head to my in-laws for 4 days very early on the 26th... hopefully we will get to celebrate Christmas 2.
