Cali, PDX people, plan me a trip
Hi! I've been a long time lurker and have posted a few times and haven't brought the funny. Despite that please plan me a trip for Memorial Day to Portland.
We are thinking of staying out there from May 26th through June 4th. We were also tossing around the idea of driving up to Seattle for a couple days too. Help me please

I'm very un-foodie, so I probably won't be able to offer you a ton of restaurant suggestions. PDXdria or Mouse might be a better help there.
When you're in the city, some things to do would be Powell's Books, Saturday Market, VooDoo Doughnuts. There's the skate park under the Burnside Bridge if you're into that sort of thing. You can take a tour of the Shanghai Tunnels -- I've never done it, but I've heard it's interesting. But you don't actually get to go in the tunnels, so it seems like a bummer to me. OMSI is always fun. You can check out Forest Park -- that should more than satisfy your trail needs. It's huge. There are lots of breweries you can tour and check out while you're here too.
You should check out Multnomah Falls when you head up Mt. Hood. You can stay at Timberline Lodge while you're up there. If you want something smaller, there's the Mt. Hood B&B or Cooper Spur Resort (where I got married).
The weather has a pretty good chance of being nice while you'll be here.

perfect thanks! ill pass on the skate park this time around
Any hotel recs for downtown?
I think I'm going to love the bookstore!
Love Tryon Creek, but it might be a bit out of the way if you're staying in the city. If you do Washington Park you might want to go to the Japanese Garden. It costs, but the Rose Garden next door (also in FP) is free. Although that time of year it might still be the Twig Garden. And I haven't been myself, but I know people who love Council Crest.
What kind of food do you like? Are you thinking swanky or budget? Be aware that most nice PDX restaurants still have pretty casual dress codes. Upscale- I love Veritable Quandary for drinks and dessert. Pazzo's Ristorante (you can tell it's fancy by the pretentious spelling) has always been excellent for us. For budget options there's a mass of food carts, um, everywhere. I think I must have hit one that wasn't yummy at some point, but damn if I can remember. If you like Ethopian travel over to Queen of Sheba's in NE Portland. My favorite Indian place is Swagat out in the Beaverton suburb.
For hotels, I've heard good things about the Ace if you're downtown. We stayed at Hotel Lucia for our wedding, which is nice and a good location, but kinda $$ and frankly, I'm not a $$ hotel kind of person. Travel Portland usually has deals if you're staying downtown, but I don't know how it compares to booking through a discounter. On the otherside of the river, there's Kennedy School. Not swank at all (most rooms have european bathrooms --- ie, down the hall), but an awesome converted elementary school that's now a hotel/pub/restaurant/bar/pool/movie theater. Even further out, Edgefield has a similar setup + a golf course and a spa.
For that matter, be sure to hit at least one theater pub while you're here. I'm partial to the McMenamin's chain (esp Bagdad and Kennedy School) because they have the best stout (Terminator). Go to Powell's for sure, but be sure you go to the big one on 10th and Burnside. The first time Mr M went he was disappointed b/c I had said it was huuuge and it was only like a double-size shop. Turns out he was at one of the little satellite stores. The real thing is 4 stories and a city block, so grab a map when you go in. They also have free walking maps of downtown that come in handy. The Portland Art Museum doesn't have the best permanent collection, but sometimes the traveling exhibits are good. If you like theater, I've loved everything I've seen at Artists Repertory. One of the best things you can do is hop on the Max or the streetcars and ride around the fareless zone and just get off and on when you see something you like.
"The meek shall inherit the earth" isn't about children. It's about deer. We're all going to get messed the fuckup by a bunch of cloned super-deer.- samfish2bcrab
Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
In my vast experience with Portland (I spent a weekend there once), I loved Saturday Market and Cannon Beach. But don't touch the water. It's poison. Or just very cold. Kind of the same thing, if you ask me.
BUT it was awesome to see the Pacific Ocean for the first time on my birthday and I will love Cali forever for making that happen.
