Ugh, our not very Merry Christmas present

We have a detached garage with no electrical service.  The previous owners built the garage and put in the world's cheapest door & lock.  The lock is delicate & temperamental, DH is used to sturdy garage door openers, so he often does not lock the door.  Well someone "broke" into the garage last night and stole my stockpile of detergent!  Not the spare flat screen computer monitor on the next shelf, not the power tools or lawn mower, not the bags of clothes I need to take to good will, not even the car.  Just my detergent.  The repair people came out & need to order a lock-total charge, after service visit fee, parts, etc-$190.  Total cost for an opener-$330 plus the electrician's charge.

Thank you dear neighborhood crack head.  That $30 or so worth of Tide you took is now going to cost us 10 times as much.  Next time I'll just tape a 50 to the garage and you can go on your merry way.

ETA-the worst part-DH most likely left the garage unlocked yet the jerk thief destroyed the lock anyway.

I am 99% sure it was someone with a substance abuse problem.  We're in a historic district which is really just a fancy way of saying we live in the ghetto.  Not that everyone living in the ghetto is on drugs but I'm pretty sure they don't have as much available cash as say someone living in Indian Hill.

  • What an idiot. Sorry for the hassle and the cost to you. But I am glad they didn't take anything valuable and that they stayed out of your house!

  • I'm sorry to hear this happened to you guys!  How terrible that this has to even happen in the first place, but especially during this time of year.  I'm thankful that you are all safe and no one was injured though.

My brother's house just got broken into on Tuesday, also.  Unfortunately, they took a LOT.  They opened up every.single.Christmas present they had under the tree, took what they wanted; stole 2 half used bottles of vodka and tequila (but left the close to 10 bottles of unopened wine); rifled through their dressers and took a few of my brother's knives that were hidden, my SIL's jewelry (thankfully they threw one of the more expensive pieces, her gma's ring, on the floor); stole unopened packs of batteries they bought for their 2 year old's new toys; their Wii and Xbox...  I can't even remember everything he mentioned.  It was terrible.  They do not live in the best of areas and there was a lot taken.  Based on what my brother has discovered so far, it was probably someone who knew their house and I also think that it was someone who had a drug/alcohol problem.  I'm just so thankful none of the 3 of them were home when it happened and that everyone is safe.

  • Wow. That just seems so odd to me that they only took the detergent.

Sorry this happened.  A hassle and expense you didn't need right now, I'm sure.

  • Lovey, holy cr@p!!  I bet it really was someone who had been in their house.  I'm almost afraid to let contractors, etc into our house anymore.  You just don't know if they went through background checks, plus some companies will still hire people with records.  Even friends of freinds or family can't always be trusted.
