recommend an infant carseat...

I'm currently registered for the Graco Snugride 35, but have been hearing reviews that it's heavier than the 32 or original Snugride (22lbs weight limit).

I'm also totally clueless about when a baby would reach these different weight limits and grow out of an infant carseat.

Would it be better to register for the less expensive Snugride (22), and upgrade to a new seat once baby gets too big for this one, or to invest in the 32 or 35 and hope to get more use out of it before switching seats?

At what point did/will you switch out of the infant seat?

Re: recommend an infant carseat...

  • I had the Chicco keyfit 30 and Ben outgrew it in length far before he hit 30 lbs.  At 2.5 he is right around 31 lbs if that gives you an idea (and that is about 50%).  Unless you have a very heavy kid, most outgrow it in length.  I transitioned him to a convertible at around 10 months I think, and he stayed rear facing in a convertible until 2 (that seat had a RF limit of 35).  In our case, the 22 would have been plenty to last until 10 months since he was 19 lbs at 1 year.  I would probably go with the 32, I highly doubt you will need the 35.  There is no way you will want to be hauling a 35 lbs kid around in that thing.  Hope that gives you a few ideas :)
  • We had the standard Snugride which goes up to 22 lbs.  DD is small so she still fit (both by height and weight) when we decided we wanted to switch her to the convertible car seat at 11 months.  I think DD was around 18 lbs. then and by the time you add in the weight of the seat itself (7 or 8 lbs. I think) it was pretty heavy for hauling around.

If I had it to do again I would have no problem buying the same 22 lb. limit seat.  If your kid hits 22 lb. before he outgrows the seat height, you really won't want to be carrying him in the infant seat anymore anyway.  It's much easier to carry a larger child in your arms than to lift a heavy carseat by the handle with one hand.

  • We have a Snugride (not sure which, but we got it in 2008 with a stroller system if that helps!), and Jake also outgrew the height far before the weight.  He was in a convertible car seat at 6 months, which was really early compared to the other moms I knew...but he's also always been 90%+ percentile for height!

  • taylor was 19 lbs and 26+ inches at her 6 month appt and we had a regular snugride.  she's a big kid, like jake and owen, so i switched her to an alpha omega elite convertible that weekend.  it's not bad carrying her.  we use carts a lot more, my ergo is always in the car and so is the stroller.  she just has a hard time sitting up in the restaurant high chairs, so we prop her with a jacket or something.  i think the regular snugride or 32 will be just fine

  • Wealso have the snugride that goes to 22lbs.  Grace didn't outgrow either height or weight by 1 year.  But we decided to got her a britax marathon at a year and switch her to it (rear facing) until she hit 20lbs.  She was 18 months when she finally hit the 20lbs mark.  Liam is in the same snugride Grace used, he is a bigger baby so far but I think he will likely still make it to close to a year before we need to switch him.  I think you would be fine getting a regular snugride or the 32.  Oh and now at almost 3 Grace weighs somewhere around 26lbs or so.

  • We also had the regular snugride, and Marcus also outgrew the height limit before the weight; I honestly cannot imagine having an 'infant' that weighs 30-35 pounds, and if you did have that heavy of an infant you would not want to carry them around in their seat at the weight!  Marcus is 16 months and still around 22 or 23 pounds.  We switched to the convertible around 7 or 8 months because of his height and just because we couldn't carry him around in the bucket anymore anyway.

  • We are in the minority here...but we skipped an infant seat all together and have put him in a rear facing convertible since day one. Honestly, I haven't felt like I needed an infant seat yet.  I prefer to wear him when we go shopping or out to eat...and that's what we've done.  With a good carrier, I felt that it has been nice keeping my baby in my 'bubble' so strangers stay away.

  • We had regular Graco Snugrides... the boys were in them until 6 months when it got to be too much for me to carry both of them in those seats and easier to just have them in the convertible seats (RFing) and put them into the stroller...

The boys didn't reach 22lbs until they were almost 18 months, and are now still only 25ish lbs... I can't imagine carrying them in an infant carrier at this weight, plus I think they would be too tall for the limit on the Snugrides...

  • We went with the Chicco Keyfit. I had originally registered for the snugride but DH liked the Keyfit after comparing both at the store. Our friends have a snugride and when we went out to dinner we had them side by side and they commented on how our handle was easier to move back and forth and the "glide" (when you rock them back and forth on the floor, very key when putting a newborn to sleep :)) is smoother on the keyfit. I was going to go with a larger version like the 32 or something since I knew our kid would be tall. I'm so glad I didn't. Caroline is 8 months and hasn't outgrown the Keyfit yet, it goes to 30inches/30 pounds, and we are nearing the inches. She is 17 lbs and I'm done carrying that thing. We are moving to the convertible in the next couple of days, next car ride. I did enjoy having the infant carseat though since she could stay alseep and be protected, etc.
