Buying a new car...

IS STRESSFUl!

I just wanted to put that out there. :) H and I are looking for a larger SUV, possibly with a third row. I love the Chevy Traverse but am waiting to see the 2011 Ford Explorer. I have only seen a couple on the road and they aren't in stock at any dealer right now.

I just bought my Jeep Compass in May, which I love, but we found out a month later we were having twins. The space in the Compass is very limited, especially once you add the carseats and double stroller.

I really wanted to buy American but there are just better deals on imported cars. And I was a little surprised to see that many of the Ford cars are made with 50% parts from Mexico. Not to get off on a tangent, but I wasn't aware that "American" cars might not really be American made.

So now I am back to square one and comparing SUVs to minivans and deciding what to buy! It is a tough call because I want to upgrade to all the cool new features but H is against financing. And the worst part is I bought my Compass in May and I am getting crap for it to trade in :( I wasn't expecting full price but less than half after only 5 months?!!

OK vent over...thanks for reading if you made it this far!!

If you LOVE your car and it is roomy...let me know!!!

Re: Buying a new car...

  • I'm kinda clueless about cars but MH is an expert. He and some of his friends are really really into minivans, as funny as it may sound. So many people like to say that minivans are stupid and soccermomish, but he's really pro-minivan, and he says we'll definitely get one if we ever have kids. His best friend got one for his family (stupid me can't remember what kind, I'll have to find out and tell you) and they all love it so much, it's so roomy and all of that.

I know none of that helps you :P I'll let you know what kind of minivan they have!

  • We will be in the market for a new car in about 6mths hopefully and yes, I'm going the mini van route.  I have resisted for a long time but with two kiddos and the road trips that we take I just can't hold out any longer!

I know a few people that have the Honda Odyssey and LOVE it so I think that's what I'm leaning towards.  The new 2011 ones are redesigned and look really nice but I think we will end up with a used one.

    Have fun car shopping!!!

  • Well I have an Xterra, which is no larger than your Compass.  But have you looked at the Armada?  I love them and would have gotten one, but DH says it is too big and there is no need for it (I guess he is right....booo!)

  • My sister did the same thing she bought a rav4 and, having an 8 and 6 year old. Few months later she found out she was having twins. She traded it in for the Toyota Sennia(sp) van. I drove her older kids around all week when she had the twins....LOVE!!!! I want one lol

I think this is the one our friends have, but I'll confirm...

  • I love my Hyundai Santa Fe.  I only have one back seat, but you can get a model with a third row.  It may not be roomy enough for you, but I suggest you check out Hyundais.  They always have great warranties and the safety features are awesome!

  • We bought a Toyota Highlander during their 0% financing last spring.  I really like it.  It has a 3rd row and an optional middle seat in the 2nd row (that you yourself and take out/keep in).  You cannot use the 3rd row if you are bringing a big stroller along though.  The double snap and go fits but my city mini does not fit.

    Good luck!

Lauren, I responded to this earlier but it disappeared! Wasn't your H in the car business before? I thought he might have some good info :) I am not against a minivan at all, I wouldn't mind driving one and they actually include more features than most SUVs in their standard models. At least that's what it seems like to me from internet research.

I like the highlander! I don't plan on using the third row with the stroller, but it is nice to know that the car will grow with me if we need it to. I am planning on having this next car until I cannot drive it anymore. H just bought a Ford Edge Limited and I am in love. But he drove his 2001 Lexus RX300  to almost 200,000 miles and can justify that purchase! So no more car buying for us for a very long time, I am really doing my research on this and test driving everything.

  • I love love love my Honda Pilot. It is huge, has an optional third row so you can either fit 8 people or have huge trunk space. And I am a huge Honda fan - my last car was a Honda Civic and was 11 years old and was at almost 200k miles. They run forever if you take good care of them!

Yeah he sold/financed cars for 6 years so he's an expert :) The minivan I was thinking of that his friend has is a Toyota Sienna and they love it.

    GL with the search!

  • What is the deal with the Ford Explorers?  H and I have been looking to buy a new car and saw the commercial for the 2011 Explorers MONTHS ago, and I really like them.  The dealer told us 11/15 they would begin stocking them, but we have yet to find one.  I'm not about to order a truck sight unseen.  We also looked at the Pilot, which I didn't really care for the design of, and the new 4Runner.  Right now the 4Runner is in the lead.

I have my name and # in at every dealership in the area and I would suggest you do too! They are coming in one or two at a time and selling the same day. Dealers are REALLY pushing the 2010 and I almost bought one but am so glad H was there to walk away from it. I don't know a lot about cars but the 2011's are supposed to be all on one frame and drive more like a car or crossover SUV vs. the 2010's which drive like trucks. Plus just all the new upgrades since it is a newly designed model. I am not against the 2010's but I am sure the price will drop dramatically once the 2011's aren't so hard to come by.
