Holiday Memories...

So now that the holiday weekend is over, how was everyone's first Christmas as a married couple?

We hosted a little get together for our neighbours on Christmas Eve - holiday margaritas, chips and salsa - and it was a great time! Then DH and I exchanged our gifts and he surprised me with a pair of diamond earrings AND a new laptop!! And he loved his gifts too...I got him the entire series of The X-Files, plus both movies...among other things.

Christmas day wasn't quite what I was hoping it would be...the ILs came over for an afternoon dinner and then had to leave quite quickly after dinner to meet up with BIL and his FI...they 'couldn't' make it to our house for our very first time hosting Christmas dinner...lame.  So it was a lot of work and anxiety for the 'perfect' meal only to be done and over with in like 2 hours.

So although it was our first holiday together, it was also my first ever not being with or at least spending some time with my family...and this made me very sad.  My grandfather just got out of the hospital after 6 weeks and 2 surgeries, so his mobility isn't the greatest.  We had our holiday dinner yesterday at my mom's with the family (Boxing Day in Canada) and it was nice...but something just seems off about this holiday season.

I wanted so much for this to be 'perfect' and 'special' and all I feel is sad.  Anyone else feel this way? Hopefully not - I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend!!

Re: Holiday Memories...

  • We had a nice holiday. Our parents live about 10 minutes apart, so DH and I were back and forth constantly. We really would have liked to have some time to just ourselves, but that isn't going to happen until we go on our HM on Friday...

  • We had a pretty nice first Christmas.  We spent Christmas Eve with DH's family, while we spent the 23 with mine as they had to head up to Wisconsin to see my extended family.  This was, however, the first year that I hadn't been with my family or seen my extended family on Christmas, so that was a bit strange, but it was okay.

I made DH and I a really nice lunch for Christmas day, and we opened presents and just spent the whole day relaxing and enjoying the day with each other and our puppy.

  • It was one of the BEST christmases I've ever had.  The IL live in our town, and my hole family is 2700 miles away, so we spent part of Christmas eve and day with the IL (and had plenty of time to just hang out the two of us.)  It was so relaxed, and there was no traveling (other than the 10 min. car ride to the IL.)  I missed seeing my family, but I wasn't nearly as sad as the first time I stayed in CA for Christmas.

     Please don't tell my mom.

  • DH and I spent Christmas Eve at my Mom and Dad's.  We woke up Christmas morning, opened our presents, and then packed up and went to my parents to open gifts there and have brunch.  Then we went to DH's dad's house for opening more presents.  This is what we've done for the last three years so it wasn't much different as a married couple.  We will have to wait until we have babies to host at our house :)

  • My Mother was visiting from NZ for Christmas, so I cooked dinner for my Mother, DH and I on Christmas Eve, and then we all went to bed at a reasonable hour.

DH got called into work at 5.30 am on Christmas morning.  Mum and I went to Christmas lunch at a restaurant with a friend of mine and her Mother.  We didn't get home until 4pm and DH had dinner on the BBQ.  We opened our pressies and then had our BBQ dinner and went to bed.

Wasn't as lame as it sounds!
