Was this rude?

My mom asked me to bring apple pie to her Christmas party. She expected a store-bought pie, but there weren't any, so I went ahead and baked one.

As we were eating it, someone asked what kind of apples I had used. I said Golden Delicious. My mom said something like, "You're not supposed to use Golden Delicious for pies!" (For the record, both my baking book and Google say that GD is one of the best pie apples.)

Rude much? Like, hello, I made pie!

Re: Was this rude?

  • Yes.  It was certainly better than store-bought.

My mom told me the pie I made at Thanksgiving was awful...but I asked for her honest feedback, so it was okay.  Ed was shocked though.  He hates my mom's pie, so I have been trying to adapt my crust recipe to something he will like.  He LOVED the pie I made, so really that was the important part--my mom doesn't have to eat my pie if she doesn't like it.  He was still shocked she would be that honest though.

  • I dunno. My family is usually rash and overly honest with each other, so I wouldn't have thought too much about it. However, it depends on the context. For the record, golden delicious are amazing for apple pie. My DH is a huge apple pie fan, and he concurs, too.

  • I guess it depends on your family. My family is pretty open and honest about what they like and don't like in the way of food, so if they'd said it to me, I wouldn't have taken offense. FWIW, I like golden delicious but only when they're mixed with other apples (like granny smith) - otherwise it's too sweet for me. I like a tart pie!
  • I would've taken offense, but I'm really weird about food.
