Will someone assist me so that I'm not a shitty parent?

The week before Christmas, B had some diarrhea.  I called the doctor and she wasn't too concerned.  Had me put him on the BRAT diet since he had no other symptoms.  The diarrhea cleared up that week but he developed other symptoms.  I took B to the doctor on December 17th, Friday.  He was very congested and had a hacking dry cough and sounded somewhat wheezy.  The doctor put him on an antibiotic because she wanted to make sure he was cleared up in case it was an infection (for Christmas) and she also did an oral steroid (Orapred) and told me to put him back on his breathing treatments through his nebulizer.  (We did this last winter, too).  He used albuterol and budesonide with his nebulizer. (Both meds twice a day).

He continued his hacking cough despite the breathing treatments through the next week and into Christmas.  He has finally stopped coughing with intensity and it's just a rare fake sounding cough maybe a couple of times a day.  So I'd say the cough is gone.

Saturday, December 25, (Christmas evening I guess?)  he came down with a fever and was extremely lethargic. Took his temp and it was 103.6.  Got motrin down him and called my aunt who has three kids.  She said he was probably/has been more than likely cutting his 2 year molars.  He is also very congested.

He's run a fever since Saturday.  Last night it got back up to 103.6 again.  We've been alternating childrens tylenol and ibuprofen with him.  For the past three days he has been lethargic, doesn't want to play at all, and has slept horribly.  My aunt says he's cutting teeth.  My mom thinks the world is ending and that I need to take him into the doctor again.

I've talked to my nurse MULTIPLE times and each time I've been given another method of something to try.  I am sure she's tired of hearing from me.

Should I take him back?  This morning he's still whiny and not himself.  Running 101 fever.  Can't breathe through his nose.  I feel like a shittastic parent that I don't really know what to do, and I realize I am being stupid for asking people on the internet...But my aunt thinks I should let it ride because it's probably teeth and my mom is to the point of taking him to the doctor herself.  I just know I'm exhausted and want him to feel better.  Anyone with experience with any of this?

  • I would take him to the doctor again. Just so they can actually see him instead of them trying to guess over the phone. It could be his teeth but that is a long time to have a fever and being congested for just cutting teeth. I could be wrong since we haven't gone through the 2 year molars yet. I know taking him to the doctor would give me peace of mind just so they could actually look at him. I hope he starts feeling better!

  • Take him in. The nurse can't see him over the phone. Yea it may be the 2 year molars but it might not be. I still that that is a high fever even for cutting teeth. Even the congestion part would worry me. He is probably swallowing all the snot and congestion nasty-ness and thT certainly won't help him feel any better. Let us know how B is doing and what the doc says!

  • Okay thanks girls. I'm taking him in at 2:45 today. The nurse didn't question me bringing him in after I told her his current symptoms and stuff that had been going on since Christmas. But then again I pretty much just told her I needed him to be seen today regardless.
