This is a teaching college question.

Do you have a PhD?  Do you have to have one to teach on the college level?  I was thinking you could have a master's and teach but I'm not sure.  I've toyed with the idea of teaching college level in the future but am not interested in pursuing a PhD, ha!

  • I think it depends on the school/major/class. We only have one teacher here with a PHD, everyone else has a Masters. But, I think to teach Chemistry at a University for example, you do need a PHD. I think most schools and degrees just require a Master's to teach at the college level though, including my school.

  • ::Butting in::

    I know at Iowa State there are a lot of faculty positions that just require Masters, but many of the tenured positions require Ph.D's.

    I would also like to teach at the university level some day but ISU would have to start offering development or non-profit management classes.

  • i'll butt in too, a lot of our adjunct profs only have masters... but i'm pretty sure you need to have a PhD to get tenure. but i know plenty of long-time profs that only have their masters.

    fwiw, you can teach w/ a bachelors degree if the school only offers an associates degree. well, i did this in the past. guess it depends on the school.

    to sum up, you can definitely teach at the college level, just need to find one that will let you ;)

  • Thanks everyone!  Honestly, what I'd want to teach is either an English class or remedial math.  I'm not good enough at math to be doing calculus (I never took it) or some crazy math but I could do one of those remedial classes and maybe algebra.  I'll have to look into it later I guess :)  I was just curious if I could do it.

    Ohhhhh - maybe I can teach an online class :)  OHHHHHH....a special education online class...... OK, now my wheels are turning!

    Ya, you would have to see what the schools require. I know my school, for instance, requires a Masters in Math to teach math and a Masters in English to teach English. I would love to teach online classes someday! haha
