Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap car rentals in Europe (Germany in particular)? The only requirement for the car is that it has to be an automatic. Thanks!

Re: Renting a Car in Europe
Do you want to rent one from the airport or are you trying to do something more local, if so, what area in Germany? For larger rental companies, I have used Europcar and Sixt with no issues. The big ones, Hertz, Avis, etc. are all here as well so if you get any discounts from those companies it may help you with costs.
Also, you can get an International Drivers Permit from AAA, but you will want to brush up on the laws and traffic signs of each country you are driving in. For instance, in Germany you yield to the person on your right when you come to a 4-way stop (unless it is a priority road or there are other traffic signs), you cannot pass on the right on the autobahn and slower traffic must move to the right lane. Generally speaking, you are not supposed to drive in the left lane, but when it is busy both lanes get congested...but you still must only pass on the left. It's not too complicated, but there are some unique rules to driving in Germany.
We are planning on renting the car in Wurzburg and dropping it off at the Munich train station. Ideally, we'll be picking up the car as close to the city center in Wurzburg around 1pm and dropping the car at the Munich train station 3 days later at 8pm, before we catch the overnight train to Venice.
How necessary is the International Drivers Permit? I've never rented a car in Europe, but my parents have, and I can't remember either of them ever getting a permit.
Because you are renting from one city and returning it to another, a larger car company is going to be your best bet. Local car companies would charge a transportation fee to get the car back since they probably don't have locations in both cities. You will probably still have a fee because you aren't returning it to the same place, but it should be less. Europcar and Sixt have locations in both of those cities and throughout Europe so if you have any issues they are close by to assist.
Since I live here I had to actually take the German drivers test and get a different type of license so I'm not sure if it is absolutely required, I would check with the car rental company to see if they require it.
