Why I Hate Google

I recently began running - I've had a knot in my right calf for a while and running today made it worse.  So I did some research on how to treat that - heat, massage etc. and came across something that said to never massage calves because the pain could be a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis) and you could loosen it and give yourself a pulmonary embolism.

So, of course, now I am freaking out.  Grr.  I don't really want to go to the doctor because I really think it's unlikely to be a clot, but considering we're planning to start trying for a family soon, and while pregnant the risk of DVT is greater and your medication options are fewer...  Wondering if I should.

UGH.

Re: Why I Hate Google

  • i'd go see a doctor to ease my mind (can't hurt if it makes you less worried). and in the meantime, STAY OFF google, webMD, or anything like that!

  • first of all........YAAAAAH!!! can't wait to see little ditribal's in the future!

and secondly, it won't hurt to go to the doctors!

  • If it was a DVT, you would have redness, and it would be warm to the touch, and potentially have some brusing on the skin in the area, and if its been around for a while (like more than a couple days) its probably more of a muscular issue than a DVT.   DVT's become very painful too.  I'd call the doctor to be seen but I don't think its an urgent issue.  Usually DVT's are caused by a recent surgery, or by staying in one position for too long, like a long flight, etc.
  • Thanks!  Yeah I don't have any of the other symptoms besides what has been a knot in there for a while.  I'm calming down now.  I may go see the doctor to ask for advice regarding the pain after running - my arch is much lower on that side, and even though my right side is stronger my leg hurts much more than my left - so I can ask him about it then.

It's never been more of a dull ache, either, and yeah it's been around on and off for months.

I appreciate your thoughts - definitely comforting!  The place I read about not massaging calves wasn't a super-reputable source either.  Just some forum.
