Help! chapstick in the washer

So my DH decided to be helpful and do a load of laundry. He threw some of his clothes in with mine, and, long story short - didn't check his pockets.

Turns out there was a chapstick in one of his pockets, and now a few things have spotted oily marks on them. (Mainly 2 pairs of Khaki work pants - both cotton)

So, are my clothes salvageable? How can I try and get these marks out?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Help! chapstick in the washer

  • This happens in my house at least once a month! Sometimes the items are not salvageable, sorry to say. I have had luck re-washing some items in the hottest water the fabric can stand and drying again. No promises though, since I don't know what materials we're talking about!
  • If the spots seems a little greasy still, maybe dab some baby powder or cornstarch to absorb it. I'd follow that with a stain remover, but good luck. My DH does this too :(
  • Nope there is something you can do...dab the spots with some Varsol (paint thinner). It reeks and you will have to wash the clothes a few times to get rid of the smell but it takes the oil out even if you've washed them a few times already. Better than tossing good clothes...good luck!

  • Awesome! I'm glad to know there's a solution to this!  This makes me so mad when it happens!  Not that I've been upset with DH-because he was trying to be helpful, but why is it so easy for chapstick to stay in those darn pockets!?!  It's "destroyed" many of my favorite polos for work.  I think I will try "Goo-gone" the next time it happens.  Maybe it'd work better than paint thinner??  I'll check back! haha

  • Chapstick is an oil based product, so you should be able to get it out.

In the laundry aisle of your grocery store, there's a product called Lestoil. It looks like a bottle of vegetable oil and it'll be buried somewhere. It definitely will not have the prime eye-level, center shelf placement. Lestoil is really good at getting oil based stains out of laundry. Just follow the directions on the bottle.

  • I've done this a couple of times, and I've found that dish soap works very well at getting out the stains.  Use Dawn, or something that boasts on cutting grease.  I usually dab some dish soap on the stain, let it set for a while, then wash it.
  • Also, Goo Gone works wonders.
  • Dish soap always gets out my oil stains.
  • It used to happen to me all the time. I use palmolove dish soap. I actually keep it on hand just for this problem. Because it is an oil based product, the dish saop that helps with the grease, helps get the stains out. Works almost off of the time...depending on fabric. Works on my cotton...

Note: It may take two washings, DO NOT dry the clothes in between. Drying sets the stain and makes it harder to remove. Good Luck!
