Baby puree help - Nolan hates chicken

I tried to do my own chicken - baked it, then pureed it with some water.  He hates it.  First thing he's ever eaten that's nearly made him gag.  Loves peas, green beans, carrots, pretty much everything, but not this chicken .  What did I do wrong?  Too dry?  Too bland?   I seriously thought he was going to puke and I felt like the worst cook ever.  I know they say to intro new foods by themselves, but maybe I should combo it with something tastier????

Re: Baby puree help - Nolan hates chicken

  • Mix it with something that he likes.  Owen only ever ate meat purees that we're part of a mix: chicken with rice, turkey and sweet potatoes, chicken and apples, etc.

  • I'd probably gag too if someone fed me that ;)  You could try just offering really finely chopped chicken breast or maybe try seasoning it with something to give it more flavor, some dried herbs maybe, maybe make a little chicken salad out of if it with some greek yogurt (can't remember if he's doing dairy yet).  At this point, you can probably experiment a little more with taste and texture.

  • I remember pureeing some chicken pot pie filling.  Ben wasn't a fan of pureed meat unless it was mixed with other things. I would just mix it with something you know he is ok with.
  • I made chicken breast with a rosemary balsamic marinade (Drew's all-natural dressing from Hannaford, it was SO good) and Riley loved it, she ate half a chicken breast!  We don't puree though, so I can't speak to that.  Like others have said, maybe try a different flavor with it?  I can't imagine the texture of pureed meat it great, though, it could be that and not the taste.

  • maybe next time boil it in some chicken stock....but we just give T itty bitty bites of meat and she does fine with that.  I have yet to puree a meat.

  • I just boil it and then puree (but no stocks or anything since I don't want to add sodium etc. ) I also add a veggie that she already has tried, like sweet potato or squash. Since you're adding something you know he can already eat your fine. I also add more veg than meat in her servings.
  • I'd mix it with veggies. Put just a little chicken to a lot of veggies. Honestly, Luke hated my purees always. So we sucked it up and just bought store brand purees.

The other thing is that I think Nolan could total handle little chicken cubes. We started doing that kind of food with Luke early and even if its not chewed he's getting it!

  • Awesome advice! Thanks girls!   Honestly when I was pureeing it, I nearly gagged, too.  I something a little sweet, like the sweet potatoes or apples, may make it more appealing.  I hadn't thought to try tiny pieces of it.  He's doing awesome with Cheerios so maybe we'll try it.  I just don't want to ruin his first experience with meat.
  • I agree on mixing it.  I used to make Jake "stew", where I would bake chicken stock, chopped sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, apples, pastina stars and chicken in a covered casserole (you could also just throw it in the crock pot or cook it on the stove).  Then I pureed it, and he loved it.  FWIW, he still does like meat all that much, but this was one of the only meat-containing things he tolerated for a loooooooong time.  GL!
