I'm getting mixed answers.
Can you get ebooks from any website (Borders, B&N, Amazon, etc) & put them on your ereader, regardless of the brand?
Or can you only gets books from amazon if you have a kindle? YKWIM, am I making sense?

Short answer, no. They use different operating systems.
However, if you have any iAnything or just a laptop:
Amazon released a "Kindle for PC" application in late 2009, available as a free download for Windows 7, Vista, and XP.[35] This application allows thousands of books to be read on a personal computer in color, with no Kindle unit required, as e-books can simply be purchased from Amazon's store.[36] Amazon later released a version for the Macintosh, in early 2010.[37] In June 2010, Amazon released a "Kindle for Android" version. With the Android application release, versions for the Apple iPhone, the iPad, PC and Mac computers, and BlackBerry cellphones are also available.[38]
