Moving to the Bay Area

Hi Ladies, just thought I'd introduce myself and request permission to lurk:)

My name is Katie, DH and I are Arizona natives currently living outside of Phoenix. We got married in June and have an adopted husky mix named London. We've been looking into moving to San Ramon for work/school in February or March. I've been on my local boards awhile but am interested to meet some of you on here since we don't know many people in the Bay Area other than my father's family.

I'm sure all of you on this board are pretty spread out like my local one is but I would love any moving/area advice especially from transplants to the area. It's a big move for us even if I am a little familiar with Alamo and Danville already. Thanks!

Re: Moving to the Bay Area

  • Permission to lurk denied...Permission to post approved! Welcome and congrats! I'm not from the Bay Area so I can't help there-I'm in Sacramento. The board has been a little slow with the holidays but this is a great group. Hope you stick around and post more!

Do you have a picture of London? I have 2 dogs-Bailey is a Boxer/Pit Bull and Pablo is an Australian Shepherd.

  • Welcome! I have family that live in Maricopa :). I'm in the East Bay, but in Richmond so a little more East than the valleys. There are a few Nesties who live in the San Ramon, Dublin, Concord and Walnut Creek areas here.
  • Hello there, welcome, and congrats!  DH & I live in Pleasanton which is close to San Ramon/Danville area.  I don't know too much about San Ramon, but don't hesitate to ask questions.

Do you have a moving date?  What will work/school be for you and/or DH?

  • Welcome! This board is great and I'm sure you'll find lots of help and insight here. Look forward to seeing you around! :)
  • hello!! and welcome!  i'm no help for moving since i'm  in sacramento as well.... Smile
  • Welcome! My IL and SIL live in SR and my DH grew up there. It's not big so I don't think you'll take long to get your bearings. But any specific questions I can run by him/them for you. If you put San Ramon in your title you might get more help from women on the Baby Board who lurk here, too. May I ask where you or your DH is planning to go to school out there? I can't think of any schools in that area.
  • DH will be going to Diablo Valley College just to finish up some general classes then he'll be enrolling in CSU East Bay I believe it's called in Hayward. I am starting a job with a company in the telecommunications industry, we are both really lucky to have found jobs prior to moving. The job market in Phoenix has been pretty terrible the last couple years so this opportunity really couldn't come at a better time.

A picture of our furbaby will be coming as soon as she will sit still for a picture. We found a boxer/pit puppy in our backyard this weekend that we're trying to find a shelter for so she's been a little busy playing with her new friend.

  • Hi and welcome! I live in San Ramon, so feel free to ask me any questions. My dh is from AZ, but he moved here from Tucson about 13 years ago or so.
  • Hello and welcome! I live in another part of the East Bay too so can't tell you a lot of specifics about San Ramon, but am happy to answer general questions about the Bay Area! Where will you guys be working? Keep in mind that DVC is in Pleasant Hill and the traffic can get kind of terrible between there and the SR/Danville area on I-680 during rush hour.

I think they have an extension in San Ramon. But yes, traffic in either direction depending on time of day can be awful.

Welcome to the boards- I live in Martinez.

  • Ah, DVC, my DH went there before transferring to UCSD. Hope your DH likes it. I used to teach high school near Hayward so I had students who went to Cal State East Bay, too. Too bad San Ramon doesn't have a BART station because I think CSEB is near one. Anyway, GL!
  • concord resident here (who used to commute b/t clayton and san ramon - no joke 90 mins each direction) ... if your dh is attending DVC, i'll suggest Pleasant Hill, Concord & Martinez over Danville or San Ramon. It's much closer to DVC and it's far cheaper than Danville/San Ramon.

i've live in concord off and on the past 20 (EEK !) years AND i too attended DVC and later transferred to a 4 yr school (UC Irvine). feel free to pm me w/ any questions.

Yes, there are two stations in Hayward and I imagine there's a shuttle of some kind running between there and campus. You could always drive from San Ramon to the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station too, park and take the train from there.

But while he's attending DVC, I agree with pink.dutch.tulips that it'd be much better to live in the Concord/Pleasant Hill area (unless he's attending the DVC extension in the SR area). No matter what, it sounds like renting is the best option for you for a while until you kind of get settled in. Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the help ladies. DH is going to the SR campus of DVC but I definitely appreciate the traffic information, travel time there is much different then here and that is definitely going to take some getting used to. As is making use of BART since we don't have anything like that here and I've only ever used it to visit the city when I've been out there on vacations.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, is there DirecTV there or Qwest cable? We want to at least move our satellite with us since we have a contract but my brother there has Comcast I believe and doesn't seem too crazy about it.

ETA: It posted before I typed!

We have DirecTV and Dish Network, and depending where you are AT&T Uverse. Good luck with all your move stuff!

  • Comcast's quality really depends on where you are. Customer service-wise, I've found all of those companies suck.
  • I'm pretty sure you can get DirectTV here (I see the ads all the time). We have AT&T Uverse, which is pretty good. We're happier with it than we were with Comcast.
