Re: Awkward holiday moments?

  • A distant family member asked me: "when are you due?"  I tried to laugh it off and mutter something like, "not pregnant, just a bad shirt!" but she didn't hear me and wanted me to repeat myself.  I said something like "NOT PREGNANT, JUST FAT!" and walked away.

    It was embarrassing.

Can we laugh about that now, or is it too soon?

Things got awkward, mostly just for me, when my uncle gave my hubs this ornament (not my video):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TaFpKSrWRE

Everyone thought it was hilarious, except me.  I'm a bit mortified that hubs decided it was so awesome it deserved a spot smack dab in the middle of the tree at eye level.

Grandma's hearing is terrible, so she didn't get it.  She thought it was singing and she couldn't make out the words.  We tried to explain it to her, but she just didn't get it.  Poor thing.

  • I laughed immediately afterward, so feel free!  I wish I could say that was the first time I'd been asked that...damn empire waist shirts.

And that ornament is hysterical!  Poor, poor Grandma.  It's probably best that she didn't know what it was doing, hahaha!

Awww Noron!  I know what you mean about the empire waist shirts though...not the most flattering.  What was her reaction when you said that?

I laughed so hard at that panda!   Poor poor grandma :p

Nothing really eventful except for MIL calling my mom to say that H and I ruined her Christmas by going to my mother's house instead of hers.  My mom then proceeded to say - but aren't you Jewish?  And MIL hung up on her.  We laughed so hard.  And we honestly didn't go b/c MIL dodged H all week when he tried to work something out with her.

  • I was wondering what you guys ended up doing!  Your MIL sounds 98% crazy; I'm glad you guys were able to avoid her.  And good for your mom!

Um, her reaction was something along the lines of, "oh, I don't know why I thought that!" but I didn't stick around long enough to chat after that.  UGH.  It was a new shirt, too! *sigh* I think being recently married plays into it, too - at least that's what I'm telling myself.  Looks like I'll be signing up to Weight Watchers again! Stick out tongue

  • Yeah she really is.  She never used to be until well she started dating the guy before her current husband.  H tried really hard to work something out but she ignored us for an entire week.  I was dying when my mom said that.

I think being recently married has a lot to do with it.  Before it was 'when are you getting engaged' and then 'when are you getting married' and now 'when are you having a baby'.  It's so frustrating!  Awww I'm sure it was a cute shirt too!

I remember watching those wedding dress shows and they'd be like "Empire waists are flattering on everyone!"  But it's not true with shirts.  I tend to avoid them even though I like how they look... on the hanger.

And I was wondering what happened with your MIL!  I can't believe she called your mother.  Although I can see my MIL doing that someday.  When H told her that because of our work schedules we can't make it over to Rochester to do Christmas with them until the 30th she started bawling.  She had to hand the phone over to FIL.  She doesn't get that she can't get every single holiday.

  • Only a few minor breakdowns with my family. We spent Thursday unloading my sister and her kids once they arrived at my house, and my dad, being the control freak he is, yelled at everyone at some point, and we all yelled back at him. We all decided to take a chill pill and the rest of the evening went fine.

Then, I cooked dinner at my parents' house Christmas Eve for my family, spent 3 hours in the kitchen so no one would have to worry about it. We sat down to eat and my 2 year old niece started crying. My dad got all riled up and I just started crying. Then my dad started crying. And we all took more chill pills. It was a tough, emotional week, even without the holiday. But for the most part it was enjoyable and I was really happy to have 6 days home spending time with mine and DH's families.

  • :(  How is your sister doing?

  • Shazzie, I hope everything is going ok with your family, especially with your sister!

We didn't have too many awkward moments because my family is exceptionally open and everyone just laughs everything off.  Thankfully DH goes with the flow.  Especially the comment he got from my uncle when he opened our stocking and there was a pack of 2 Ferrero Rondnoir chocolate truffles ("haha Dave got balls for christmas!") lol.

His family wasn't so much awkward as a giant cluster f*ck. His mother makes absolutely no decisions and then cries when nothing goes "to plan". ahem lady, there was no plan to begin with. You can't cook us Christmas Eve dinner if all you have in the freezer is a pizza. There were tears from her because we went out for Christmas Eve dinner instead of letting her cook. DH was exasperated and his dad was pissed because she is hard to deal with and I had to be neutral to calm down DH even though I was irritated. Thank god we were only there for a day and a half.

That would be maddening to me!  I'm glad it didn't last that long.

  • Yeah I don't do well with unpreparedness. I was so thankful to leave by the time it was over.
  • Nor, my sister is doing better, each day settling into a bit more normalcy. Still a lot going on though. My nephew starts his new kindergarten class next week, the other nephew still needs a new preschool. Sis needs to find a job...lots of changes and adjustments. She's getting there. Thank you for asking :)

Clearly I missed something.  What's going on with your sister?

She left her husband, moved home to my parent's house with my nephews 2 days before Christmas.
