Sweet Sixteen

Did you have a Sweet 16 Party when you turned 16?  If so, was it just a regular birthday party type of thing or did you go all out?  (Not like those gals on the reality show where their parents spent tens of thousands of dollars, but just bigger than a regular b-day).

Re: Sweet Sixteen

  • No party. I got my license in the morning. Then I went to dinner and shopping with some girlfriends. The next day a big group of us went to Six Flags. I can't believe my parents let me drive a car load of teenagers an hour away the day after I got my license. I guess they were just thrilled to not have to chauffeur my butt around anymore.
  • Nope, but I was grounded for my 16th birthday for being caught at a party I hadn't told my parents about.  My mom was so mad at me the only celebration I had was spending the night at my sister's dorm, she got me an ice cream cake that melted...

  • Being hispanic we do something like a sweet sixteen but it's when you turn 15 (Quinceanera).  I had one and it was BIG.  Nothing like what's on that sweet sixteen show but bigger than a normal party.  My cake looked like a wedding cake (3 tiers), I had a court that consisted of 8 girls and 8 boys, my dress was pretty much a pale pink wedding dress and we had it at a reception hall.  If it was up to me I wouldn't have had it but I had no choice....

I did love my gifts though ;)

  • I remember having a party when I turned 13, but I can't for the life of me remember anything about my 16th!  I'd have to guess that I didn't do anything special.  None of my friends had anything out of the ordinary either.
  • I ended up having an impromptu one.  In my family we don't really celebrate birthdays after the 10th so I wasn't planning anything.  But I got my license earlier that day and my parents gave me a car so I went around, picked up all of my friends, and dropped them off at my house (then went out to get more).  While I was gone the first group of friends made me a birthday cake.  Then we watched "The 6th Sense" and played Twister.

It ended up being a really fun party and my last birthday party, actually!

  • I seriously don't remember what I did at all. I know we went to dinner because my family always goes out to dinner for birthdays, but other then that I can't remember. That's sad, I must be getting old.
  • I had a casino night. My parents rented out a local beach club and there were a couple tables with dealers and a family friend DJ'd. I was on a couple sports teams and my family is huge so having it at the house would have been too much trouble. I think it was catered b/c I don't remember my mom cooking at all. It was pretty small scale compared to my classmates parties. I went to a catholic HS in socal so if girls didnt do a quince, they did a sweet 16. It was mostly girls though, I don't remember boys having big parties,

  • Yes I had a sweet 16 party and no it wasn't your ordinary little party.  Why?  Because my mom opened her big mouth when I was jealous of my older sister getting all the attention about going to her prom...I was probably 4 or 5 at the time and she said that I could have a sweet 16 party.  Word to the wise, young mothers...WE DONT FORGET!  I reminded her every year on my birthday.  We rented a hall at a restaurant, had a DJ and I invited all my friend and their parents along with all of my family.  I'm sure it was far from cheap and I'm sure my mom had a huge open mouth insert foot moment!

Haha!  This is hilarious.  Along these same lines, from the time I could talk, all I wanted was to ride horses.  My Mom found out the local stable didn't let kids start lessons until they were 8.  So she told me I could go when I turned 8 thinking I would forget or lose interest.  Nope.  On my 8th bday, I asked when we were going.  That little promise cost my parents almost daily round trip rides to the barn and a boatload of money.  I think your advice is great!

  • Well, my daughter is of Hispanic descent (spelling?) and unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) we're not having a Quince.  She's decided she would rather had a Sweet 16 Instead.  She's already planning.  :D
  • Isn't Elyssa just barely 14?  Two years of planning... you better start saving!!!  Oh, and tell her I want to be on the guest list!  I'll take pictures.  Big Smile
  • I had a sweet 16 party at our country club... It was crazy expensive and totally lame. It was the weekend before my actual birthday so I didn't get a car at the party and that sucked... We had a DJ and all that crap but it still was boring. (side note - my party was NOT like the parties from MTV!!!). But yeah, I had a "big sweet 16" and it sucked. Kids are lame at 16... lol...
  • No sweet 16 party here! I could drive! That meant freedom to me. So naturally, I headed straight to the DMV after school (on a Friday), got my license, packed up my sister and my dad and drove us to California to stay and visit with my aunt for the weekend. I was in heaven! Nothing special really... well unless you count my high school sweetheart being special and cheating on me for choosing not to spend my 16th birthday at home with him....yea, that was totally what I wanted for my birthday.

  • We were very low on funds when I turned 16 -- my dad was laid off and dying of cancer  and my mom was forced to go to nursing school so she could support us when he died.

So enough of that... sweet 16s these days are nothing like they were back then.  Britt has been to a few already.  Some really nice, some very casual -- it depends on the girl, it depends on the financial status of the parents.

With that said, I'm in the process of planning hers.  She'll be 16 in 1 1/2 years - and no, it's not too early to plan.  Especially on Long Island - and since her birthday is in May (a HUGE wedding month), we need to plan early.  I am an exception though -- because her party will only cost me 1/2 -- as her dad will split the bill.  And I'm creative enough that I don't have to hire anyone but a caterer and a DJ -- I can do everything else myself.

Her theme is "Crime Scene: Sweet 16", but I've planned quite a few other parties for friends' daughters -- so if you want some help and ways to keep costs down, let me know.  I planned Lindsey's Sweet 16 with a Candy Land theme and it was AWESOME!  I wish Britt's name was Sam... I would have done a Dr Seuss theme'd "Sam I Am" party.

  • Jaye - yes, it's Elyssa's party I'm talking about!  And yes, she just turned 14.  :D

And Lisa ~ I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one planning over a year and a half out!  I, too, will have only 1/2 the expense as her dad will be footing the other half!!

We don't have a theme just yet, but her colors she's chosen is either a Zebra or Black Damask print with Purple accents.  And I'd LOVE to get insight on keeping costs down!  For sure!!

  • Hehe Shelli.  You may not like me being her Facebook friend when she really gets into planning.  I have LOTS of ideas for her.  Devil
  • shelli...

here's a site with some cute ideas: http://www.bubblybride.com/blog/2009/03/z-zebra-print-weddings/

for centerpieces, go tall white vases with black vinyl zebra stripes.  you can put purple flowers in them - or a purple bow around the vase.

Favors?  zebra beach towels maybe?  or zebra print picture frames.  Not sure what your budget it.

cake/cupcakes... you certainly don't need any help with that.  And the invites should be simple enough with a zebra pattern with a purple bow.

Any of the ideas above can be changed to a damask pattern.  Zebra is more "unisex" than damask... and probably easier to coordinate.
