Did you have a Sweet 16 Party when you turned 16? If so, was it just a regular birthday party type of thing or did you go all out? (Not like those gals on the reality show where their parents spent tens of thousands of dollars, but just bigger than a regular b-day).
Re: Sweet Sixteen
Our Wedding Day 8/7/10
Being hispanic we do something like a sweet sixteen but it's when you turn 15 (Quinceanera). I had one and it was BIG. Nothing like what's on that sweet sixteen show but bigger than a normal party. My cake looked like a wedding cake (3 tiers), I had a court that consisted of 8 girls and 8 boys, my dress was pretty much a pale pink wedding dress and we had it at a reception hall. If it was up to me I wouldn't have had it but I had no choice....
I did love my gifts though
My Planning Bio
I ended up having an impromptu one. In my family we don't really celebrate birthdays after the 10th so I wasn't planning anything. But I got my license earlier that day and my parents gave me a car so I went around, picked up all of my friends, and dropped them off at my house (then went out to get more). While I was gone the first group of friends made me a birthday cake. Then we watched "The 6th Sense" and played Twister.
It ended up being a really fun party and my last birthday party, actually!

Haha! This is hilarious. Along these same lines, from the time I could talk, all I wanted was to ride horses. My Mom found out the local stable didn't let kids start lessons until they were 8. So she told me I could go when I turned 8 thinking I would forget or lose interest. Nope. On my 8th bday, I asked when we were going. That little promise cost my parents almost daily round trip rides to the barn and a boatload of money. I think your advice is great!

We were very low on funds when I turned 16 -- my dad was laid off and dying of cancer and my mom was forced to go to nursing school so she could support us when he died.
So enough of that... sweet 16s these days are nothing like they were back then. Britt has been to a few already. Some really nice, some very casual -- it depends on the girl, it depends on the financial status of the parents.
With that said, I'm in the process of planning hers. She'll be 16 in 1 1/2 years - and no, it's not too early to plan. Especially on Long Island - and since her birthday is in May (a HUGE wedding month), we need to plan early. I am an exception though -- because her party will only cost me 1/2 -- as her dad will split the bill. And I'm creative enough that I don't have to hire anyone but a caterer and a DJ -- I can do everything else myself.
Her theme is "Crime Scene: Sweet 16", but I've planned quite a few other parties for friends' daughters -- so if you want some help and ways to keep costs down, let me know. I planned Lindsey's Sweet 16 with a Candy Land theme and it was AWESOME! I wish Britt's name was Sam... I would have done a Dr Seuss theme'd "Sam I Am" party.
Jaye - yes, it's Elyssa's party I'm talking about! And yes, she just turned 14.
And Lisa ~ I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one planning over a year and a half out! I, too, will have only 1/2 the expense as her dad will be footing the other half!!
We don't have a theme just yet, but her colors she's chosen is either a Zebra or Black Damask print with Purple accents. And I'd LOVE to get insight on keeping costs down! For sure!!

shelli...
here's a site with some cute ideas: http://www.bubblybride.com/blog/2009/03/z-zebra-print-weddings/
for centerpieces, go tall white vases with black vinyl zebra stripes. you can put purple flowers in them - or a purple bow around the vase.
Favors? zebra beach towels maybe? or zebra print picture frames. Not sure what your budget it.
cake/cupcakes... you certainly don't need any help with that. And the invites should be simple enough with a zebra pattern with a purple bow.
Any of the ideas above can be changed to a damask pattern. Zebra is more "unisex" than damask... and probably easier to coordinate.
