Intro

Hi ladies,

I have been lurking for a while (since I found out H and I were moving to the Bay Area) and want to come out of lurkerdom and start posting now that I've arrived.

I moved here (Berkeley) on Saturday and don't know anyone, besides 2 of my H's guy friends.  Before moving, I lived in metro Atlanta for 16 years.  I moved out here with 2 suitcases and a cat.  The rest of my/our stuff is in storage.  It's a little terrifying, but I love our apartment and am hoping to enjoy this experience.  I'm looking forward to getting to know you all - this board seems really nice.

If you want to know anything about me, I'm an open book!

Re: Intro

  • Welcome to the board! The Bay Area is fantastic. What brought you guys there?
  • Hi and welcome! Hope you stick around and post! The board has been a little slow lately due to the holidays but hopefully it's just temporary.

I'm in Sacramento, but I can tell you to go to Fat Slice Pizza on Telegraph and Blake's (I think it's on Telegraph too). I think we have another Nestie (Hersheykiss) from Atlanta too.

When did you get married? What kind of work do you and your DH do?

  • Also I post a RFOTD (Random Fact of the Day) almost every weekday-If you don't know what RFOTD stood for you'd think I was a looney toon!
  • Welcome!!

It's always nice to get new people 'round these parts, so I hope you stick around.

What is the one thing you didnt pack that you reeeeeallllllly wished you would have?

  • Welcome!

  • Thanks - further proof that people here are really nice!  I have visited the Bay Area a few times and I love it and I thought that people were nice, but I think the warm welcome here is cementing my theory :)

I really wish I had been able to pack so many things...picking just one is not possible!   I have a top 3 though: our tv, my food processor, and my stand mixer. We went from almost 1100 sq ft to less than 600 here, so I knew we would be downsizing!

My DH works in computer security and he felt like he had "maxxed out" in Atlanta and that the latest and greatest stuff is all here.  So, after he was unemployed in ATL for months, he suggested making the move and I agreed. He has been here, working in Emeryville, for 5 months while I tied up all of the loose ends in Atlanta and lived with my MIL.  I visited twice while we were apart; the first time to pick out our apartment, and the second to drive the car and the cat. I'm just so glad to be done moving and that I don't really have to unpack!

  • Welcome to California! So glad you came out of "lurkdom"  :)  It sounds scary there...

What do you guys do for work/school? And whereabout in Berkeley (approximately) do you live? I might be able to recommend some good restaurants, etc. I'm an East Bay native and did grad school in Berkeley a few years ago. We still live nearby and go out there once in a while to eat or shop.

Ooh, I do like pizza.  I've eaten at a few places around town during my visits and I have yet to eat anything that wasn't really good, plus all of the grocery shopping options are amazing (Berkeley Bowl)!

DH and I got married in May of 09.  I can't believe we're coming up on our 2nd anniversary!  He's a software engineer and I'm a professional Jewish educator, although I don't have a job here doing that just yet ;)

Hey I'm Jewish too! And I love Berkeley Bowl and pizza! We could be bff's  :P  Seriously though, you should try Zachary's Pizza if you haven't already - there are a couple of Berkeley locations. And I hear Little Star in Albany is good too, though I haven't tried it myself yet.

  • Hi and welcome! It's great your DH found work out here right away after being unemployed back there. Good for you guys!
  • Hi and welcome! I used to work in Berkeley and I lived there off and on as a child. I second Zachary's Pizza on College Ave and Jupiter Brewery on Shattuck is a fun place to hang out. They have brick oven pizzas. When I worked on Shattuck I used to spend a lot of time at Beckett's Irish pub. That's actually were we got engaged. Their menu has changed but they still have a fun atmosphere and amazing bread pudding. I wish I lived closer still (we just moved to San Jose this summer) and that there were more folks in that area. We used to have more get togethers in the Berkeley area but most of the women who live there are now on the bump.
  • wow..that is pretty cool. you guys basically said, let's get outta here. and made the move.  i would never be able to do something like that...soo cool!

anyway...welcome to the board.  i'm sure you will find out there are some super fabulous ladies on this board. please do stick around and post :)  also..welcome to california :)

  • Welcome! I'm in Richmond, which is about 15 minutes away from you. There are a couple of other Nesties here in Richmond, El Cerrito, Kensington and Oakland too. :)
  • Hi and welcome! I also third Zachary's Chicago Pizza - I've only been to the place on College Avenue but it's worth the long wait (and Trader Joe's is across the street). Barney's is also good for a burger, and Rock Bottom Brewery is good...food used to be cheap (not sure if it is now as I haven't been there in ages).

I'm seconding the Jupiter recommendation - I love it there, especially in the summer hanging out in the back patio area.

Yes, great burgers and fries. And they have lots of veggie burgers, too. Also if you like Middle Eastern food Pomegranate on University Ave is wonderful. For ice cream definitely head into Oakland to Fenton's on Piedmont Ave. There's always a line (even in the winter) so just plan for that. Man, now I want to trek out for dinner.
