Gift idea

My husband's cousin is pretty sick and waiting for a lung transplant. She is the only extended family DH likes. She is sweet and has been sending DS gifts even though she isn't even working right now.

We want to do something nice for her. Visiting her in LA (which she would LOVE) isn't an option for now. So, we want to send her something - gift/care package. But I'm not sure what. We're not too sure of her likes and interests. And I'm trying to avoid food items because she mentioned she's trying to lose 15 lbs before the transplant surgery.

Any ideas on what to send her?

  • What about some comfy pajamas?  You could go to pajamagram.com and see what they have.

  • I sent my mom some NAP things whe she was recovering from a surgery and she loved having something soft to lounge in.  I think I sent a blanket, socks and maybe a robe or pillow?  Anyway, there is a good selection online and in stores.

  • I sent my mom a pajamagram a couple of years ago and she was thrilled with it.

  • Is she into audio books?  If she is going to be in the hospital for a while, she might want to listen to a book if she is too tired to hold one.  An Amazon gift certificate would allow her to choose an audio book or videos to help her pass the time.

Find out if she would like a visit from Merry Maids.  She might derive a lot of comfort if they clean her house before she goes into surgery, so that she knows it is taken care of.

If there is some kind of grocery delivery service in her area, get her a gift certificate to that.  Then she can order groceries when she is too tired to go to the store.

Find out her favorite restaurants and see if you can get gift certificates.  If they deliver, even better.

Finally, get her a three month subscription to "fruit of the month" club.

  • I had brain surgery a few years ago and was in the hospital for a while, and not able to walk around for a few months.

I got a ton of flowers, plants, lotions, candies, and cards. They were all so sweet. But...my favorite things were a GC to a cleaning service, GC to dinner by design, super warm fleece blanket. I'd even say a laundry service would be awesome, or PeaPod or some grocery delivery system.

If she's married, I'd also get something for her husband. I know my surgery was tougher on him because he had to do EVERYTHING around the house and take care of me like I was a toddler.

But I suppose it depends how mobile she is and how she's feeling. :)

Edit: slippers, a robe, and socks for the hospital are always great. I didn't end up wearing my own clothes as much as I thought, but I did cherish my own blankets, robe, and slippers. Pajamas -- depending where she has the operation, they might rub on her weird. JMO I'd not do PJs. (I got a million headbands, hair clips, hair ties, etc. from people with great intentions, but they all hit my head in terrible spots and I couldn't wear any of them.)
