*Ringy* Re: Alaska cruise

DH and I canceled a cruise we were going to take in Feb. Our down payment stayed as a credit with Carnival. We are considering using it for a cruise to Alaska at some point (We have up to 2 years to use the credit).

Which cruise did you take? Did you like it? Any recommendations? Any other info you have would be helpful too! I think we're looking at a 7 day cruise departing from Seattle.

TIA!

  • Ooh, fun!!

We went on Celebrity and loved it! The cruise departed from Vancouver and was a 7-day northbound cruise, ending in Seward. We flew back from Anchorage. I had been advised to take a one-way cruise rather than a round-trip, as you get to go farther and see more. (I believe that they adjust the price of the cruise to make up for the extra flight.) I really liked the northbound cruise as we got to go from familiar landscape to increasingly unfamiliar landscape.

Our cruise stopped in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Hoonah. We also had a stop at the Hubbard Glacier which was AMAZING. Carnival's stops are probably a little different but I think that Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway are pretty common among a lot of cruises. They may not take you to Hubbard but will probably take you to some other large glacier.

    Quick rundown of the stops:

Ketchikan - we did a wildlife tour on one of the boats that used to be on Deadliest Catch, and visited a salmon run.

Juneau - we took a bus ride to the Mendenhall Glacier (and the driver gave us sort of a city tour), explored the town a bit, and then took the tram up to hike on Mt. Robert

Skagway - we took a tour canoeing out to a glacier, and explored the town which has a gold rush museum and shops. There are also lots of other good excursion options here like the White Pass Rail.

Hoonah - this stop is exclusive to Royal Caribbean; we did a private whale watching tour

Hubbard Glacier - this was just a 45 min stop but it was an absolutely breathtaking sight... like Niagara Falls, but in glacier form

I would highly, highly recommend it! We went in August (obvi) and the weather was decent. We had some clear days and some rainy days. I had heard that the weather was amazing that year in June/July, but I'm not sure if that was typical. Kari could probably tell you more about typical weather.

If you decide to book it, let me know and I can give you more details about the specific excursions that we took! If you're interested in being active, you'll probably spend more on excursions on this cruise than you would on, say, a Caribbean cruise, but they are highly worth it. IMO the things that are worth doing on this trip are the expensive ones.

And ditto that you must GTG with kari. Smile
