Question for the mamas

I have been looking online at different bedding sets for the nursery and of course every single one that I fall in love with is ridiculously expensive. So, my question is, is baby bedding really worth the cost? Or is it better to buy the crib sheet, bumper etc. separately? That seems to be the cheaper option! Especially since I am not sure how often the quilt or the diaper stackers are even used.

Thanks for your help, ladies!

p.s. I am pretty sure that we got our queen size bedding for a third of the price of what the baby bedding costs!

Re: Question for the mamas

  • I bought a set -because it was pretty cheap and I couldn't find farm theme stuff seperate. I use everything that came in my set (except the quilt is on the back of my rocker as decoration for now.) The diaper stacker is perfect for holding our prefolds and now that we are converting to pocket diapers I will probably just fidn another use for the stacker.

    Baby bedding is absurdly priced.

  • I splurged and bought our crib bedding from Land of Nod.  The quilt hangs on the wall (so I guess it is decorative but not functional).  Patrick will never use it as a blanket - he hates blankets and I plan to make him a new quilt when we move him to a twin bed next year.

In addition to the sheet I got with the bedding through LoN, I bought a very similar looking one from Target.  I have no idea at this point which one came from which store.  They look of similar quality.  I have other sheets, too, some are carters, and I don't really see a huge difference in any of them. Some people don't use bumpers; we put one on P's crib, but it came off a long time ago. If I could do it again, I would buy a few crib sheets and maybe a bumper and call it a day!

That all being said, P doesn't even sleep in his crib, except for some naps, and we converted it to a toddler bed months ago.  So in all honesty, we could have skipped the nursery furniture all together. Well, except for the changing table (which most people told us we wouldn't need) which we still use to store everything.

  • Personally I think you could piece it and it would look just as good. We purchased a set from BRU for about $200 and all I used was the sheet, crib ruffle(not sure this is the right name), and bumper. The Quilt hangs on his wall and I never used the diaper stacker. I didn't use the bumper once he started moving around so it was a waste for me. The crib sheet that came with the bedding ripped after the first a couple of months, I swear it shrunk in the dryer... not a good quality, thats for sure.

  • In my experience, we have never used the diaper stacker.  I am currently using the quilt to cover Levi, but it's a bit awkard fitting.  Before that I would lay him on it on the floor. I do use the bumpers that came with the bedding.  And I have the crib skirt on, but it doesn't fit properly in the corners.

We got our bedding from BRU but, I found it a bit cheaper on www.babysupermall.com  I purchased our wallpaper border from there.

    Not sure if that helps.

  • We got C's bedding set at babysupermall.com as well.  Great price!!  I LOVE the theme- however, I haven't used the diaper stacker at all... the bumper was just for show until C was able to sleep in the crib I had to get breathable bumpers... so other than the sheets and bedskirt (and curtain, light switch, mobile) we didn't need a whole set- but they didnt sell things separately, I don't think.

For our next one- if it's a girl, I will probably just buy the sheets, curtains and bedskirt/bumpers separately (or sew them myself if I feel the need to LOL)

  • honestly, I think you could do sheets (which are cheap) from anywhere (target has some nice ones) and buy a quilt.

We didn't even use bumpers until she was 7 mo old or so because her arms/legs were going through the slats. And we got breatheable bumpers anyways.

Breatheable bumpers are recommended because there is no suffocation risk PLUS when they start standing in there they can't use the breatheable ones to climb out because they smush down.

So for us we just bought sheets and a blanket or two (which she still hasn't used those) and people made us quilts (which she still hasn't used).

For me I think it is a waste to spend SO much on them even though they are cute.

  • I made Maddy's quilt and bought 4 sheets for about 1/2 the price of a bedding set. We wouldn't have used a diaper stacker as we use a shelf on athe changing table. We don't have bumpers and DH would have laughed at a crib skirt.

  • The only item from our bedding set that I've used since Day 1 is the dust ruffle. That's it. I bought extra sheets in flannel to be super soft, since the ones that came with the set were crappy.

As far as the quilt goes, it's been folded in his closet since he arrived. Talk about a waste! I did use the bumpers for a short time until I got tired of messing with them when I was changing the sheets. Now I use breathable bumpers and they're AMAZING.

If I could go back, I wouldn't buy a bedding set. I'd just buy coordinating pieces, since that's what I ended up doing anyway.

  • Not a mom yet obviously, but we plan to get cute coordinating sheets, probably a dust ruffle to allow under crib storage, and coordinating mobiles, wall art, etc. I want to get breathable bumpers for safety reasons, and kids aren't even allowed to use blankets till, what, one year? We do plan to get a good chair/footstool and a covertable crib, but will likely stick to inexpensive bedding. They puke on it anyway right? :)
  • SO I didn't buy a set, and I'm okay with that choice. and his room really looks great, since I did get the coordinating accessories, but you aren't supposed to put ANYTHING in the crib with them. No bumpers, quilts, etc. I just got a few sheets, and Mike's mom made a crocheted blanket that I snuggle him in. I got the mobile, baskets, stuffed animals, lamp, wall hangings, and wall decals that all match seperately. Also, if it's a set from BRU, check burlington coat factory, they carry alot of the same things.

  • Thanks, ladies! :) You all confirmed what I was thinking. I would rather have extra sheets etc. than all the other "extras". Also, the bedding that I like is from Pottery Barn Kids and the crib skirt is pretty expensive. I am thinking about looking for a plain white crib skirt somewhere else and maybe just ordering that. Having a baby is starting to feel like wedding planning all over again where everything is unreasonably expensive!

  • I think I'm the odd one out here. I got my bedding set from JC penny on clearance and use it daily. I have the valances, diaper stacker, dust ruffle, crib sheets, bumper, hamper, and comforter. The bumper, comforter, and one sheet was a set. I bought extra sheets in solid sage to match. I go against popular belief and have used the bumper and comforter in her crib since she first started napping in it and then moved there at night at 12 weeks. She is not a big mover on her sleep. If you find a set you like just Google the name of It and you may find it cheaper on another site. Not sure if that would work with a pottery barn set, though.

that's because it is, just think it is 5+k just for a normal birth (with no epidural) in most parts of the country and 30+k for a c-section! silliness
