Not for me but for my nephew, sister and family.
My nephew will be 9 in February and suffers from a condition called Tuberous Sclerosis that causes epilepsy, severe autism and a whole bunch of other problems. He was born a twin but his twin brother (obviously with the same condition) died three years ago from a massive seizure that stopped his heart.
Anyhow - we found out today that my nephew has to have brain surgery in the next few months. The area of focus/trouble is in the very center of his brain and they have to remove some calcifications that are growing too fast and will cause some pretty serious problems if not stopped ASAP.
Strangely, we are relatively used to brain surgeries. My nephew that died three years ago had two brain surgeries in his short time with us. Each time he recovered faster than doctors could imagine and we were so proud of his courage and strength. Now it is his brother's "turn."
My nephew has made so many accomplishments in this past year - he is almost fully potty trained (which sounds odd considering he is almost 9 but in reality it is a BIG BIG deal!) and just recently has begun to use words, although reluctantly. Again, a massively huge accomplishment for a severely autistic and (previously) non-verbal developmentally challenged kiddo. My sister is worried that all of his progress this past year could be erased from the surgery. He - and his entire family - has fought so hard for every small achievement and milestone. It will be heartbreaking if all that effort is wiped away.
Additionally, when my other nephew had his surgeries, my sister only had his twin to take care of (she's a SAHM), but now she has another son who will be 5, a daughter who is 3 and another daughter who is 3 months. It will be A LOT harder for her to be at the hospital with her eldest son with all her little ones at home.
Ugh - I just can't even begin to think about it! When I think of one thing I get overwhelmed with all the other things, complications, stresses, fears . . .
If you could spare some thoughts, prayers or vibes for my sister and her son, I'd really appreciate it. They still need to get more answers and the surgery isn't scheduled yet (probably more tests are needed), but I am hoping that they get the answers they need (and want) soon and that the surgery can go forward with minimal complication and stress. I know that's wishing for a lot, but she needs and deserves a lot.
Thanks!
