There's something seriously wrong in my hometown

This morning the fourth alumni, from my high school, in the past month and half died. The oldest was 32 and the youngest was 19 (her 20th bday would have been last Monday). And this a pretty typical year. It's a small town. Two of my high school boyfriends past away a few years ago. I don't know, it just seems crazy that so many young people are dying.

Laura, what year did your DH graduate? Is this happening to Chesapeake alum too or just Northeast? I'm just in total shock.

  • That crazy and really sad for the community too.  Two questions come to mind, how many student go to/went to your high school, and are they all dying from something similar or completely random things?

My high school had around 1200-1400 students and there were a couple of deaths every year of students and sometimes teachers.  I think the majority were from car accidents or natural causes, but some were from playing around with guns or drug overdoses.  Really sad stuff.  :(  I'm sorry this is all happening so close together.

  • About the same as you. More like 1000 in my high school. Of the 4 recently - 1 from cancer, 1 car accident (she was drunk), 1 suicide and I don't know the one from today yet. Three of them I knew from school (were there when I was). The youngest was friends with some of my friends younger siblings. Just seems like a lot of young people but maybe it's normal. Idk.
  • Wow, I am so sorry. That is awful

  • I am so sorry deaths are so hard, and it really hits home when you knew them.

I graduated in a class of 120 and I know 4 have died already, and I graduated in 2005.  I think it must be normal, but it's still so sad.

  • That does seem like a lot.  Very sad.
  • I don't keep track, but for a while I remember going through big stretches of finding out young people from my hs died.  It's bizaare.  Just remember that everything is a phase.  It might seem insane right now, but then maybe you won't hear anything for 5 years.
  • Numbers-wise it's probably "normal", but to have that many occur within 6 weeks seems a bit much.  On top of that it's right around the holidays.  Hopefully like Natalee said, you won't have any more of this for a long time.

He graduated in 2000.  His 10 year reunion was last month, and they didn't say anything about people in their class even though they were supposed too. One of his best friends died in 2003, but he was in Iraq.  I also feel like its happening more and more in that area.  A lot of it seems to be drinking and driving.  Seems like every time I turn around I hear about someone else in this area that died though.  It sucks.

  • So sad!

We have only 2 that had died, but our class was 50 students so I guess that's a lot for our class size. One of them was when we were 11 though, suicide and very sad.

I should remembered we were the same year. I bet we know a lot of the same people.

For everyone else, my hometown has 2 high schools. Laura's Dh went to the other one. Small world.

  • That's been happening in my small hometown but not to alumns- to current students!  For several years in a row there were at least 2-3 kids that died in the graduating class... a graduating class of only 40 or less!  It was really, really hard on everyone.  Luckily, for the past couple of years this hasn't happened.  *fingers crossed* that the streak is done for both of our hometowns.
