Calling All Cat People

I kinda, sorta told Jim we could get a cat for his birthday.  We went to the shelter today and met a couple and I think that I am going to go back tomorrow and make a decision.

We have a carrier, litter box and food/water dishes.  I'll get food, a scratching post and some toys tomorrow if we get a kitty.  What else might I be forgetting and what suggestions do you have for introducing our furbaby to his/her new home?

  • Aww YAY!

I assume you also have food and litter? :)

Kitty might like a spot to crawl into. Do you have any cat-shaped boxes lying around? Otherwise we just leave the carrier out with the door removed and Sherlock sometimes hangs out in there.

When you get home, set up the litterbox and take kitty there so she can orient herself to your home around it. Otherwise others may have more suggestions, but Sherlock was pretty easy. We just let him loose and he just explored on his own.

    GL!

  • I do have litter. Smile

ETA:  Once we put the litter box somewhere, can it be relocated later or will that just confuse kitty?  I'd like to put let the kitty out in the guest room at first, but don't want to keep the litter box there permanently.  Can you tell that I've always had dogs?

  • This may also go without saying but don't forget the litter scoop!

So exciting.... have either of you ever had cats before?

Jim has, but not me.  I went back and asked another question above.

  • I think kitty will be OK, the smell of the litter is pretty obvious to them. If anything you could just bring kitty over to the new location just to be sure. I've also moved Sherlock's food dish around no problem.

Oh also, I put a little rug in front of the litter box opening to prevent too much scattering of litter on the floors. It still gets around but much less so.

  • I've had cats my entire life and never had a problem moving the litter box around from place to place until one of my childhood cats got older. After I move the box, I just take the cat and show them where it's at.

I have a plastic litter box mat in front of the litter box.

I volunteered at a cat rescue, be sure to ask whoever you adopt the cat from what they're favorite toys are there, if they're familiar with a certain bed type, etc..

And we need to see a picture!

  • If you have the funds to get a cat tree, scratching post, and perch in one. We spent about $150 on a tree that is about 6 feet high and has 3 perches and covered in carpet and rope and my cats love it.

  • Depending on how big your place is, I would recommend keeping kitty confined to one or two rooms at first (for like the first day or so) just so she/he gets used to being in the home.  You can of course let her/him out for supervised exploring, but if you go out, I would recommend returing kitty to the "safe room".  Also, don't be surprised if he or she cries at night for the first few nights.  If he/she seems to have trouble adjusting, Feliway is a great calming agent.

  • I think it's pretty obvious that I am SUPER excited for you guys!

all the previous suggestions are awesome! I would also recommend that you get the litter box with the cover on it... otherwise, you will have litter everywhere!

it's definitely smart to confine kitty to one room at first, and let him/her get to know and trust you before letting it loose. it may be kind of shy at first, so don't be surprised if it hides a lot... under beds and behind furniture. depending on it's history, it might be kind of skiddish at first, as some shelter animals can be. either way, this kitty will love you forever for rescuing it!

  • For playtime I recommend the laser pointer toys.  Cheddar and Muenster LOVE to play with it, and it's hilarious.
