So I made an appointment to have Monk evaluated....the doctor only does evaluations once a month and only does like four on that day...its a several hour long appointment...so we dont go to see him until February 25th. After I make the appointment I went back to the pedi for a sick call and the order for a speech evaluation and therapy is in Monks chart. The pedi (not his regular doctor) tells me that he does not have to have a full eval to have a speech eval and that I can call to get that set up. So I call all the places they have on the paper and most of them are not covered by our insurance. I found one that is covered and call to make an appointment. We cannot be seen until February 2nd....I am about at my wits end...why is it that it takes so long to get in to some specialists....I understand that they are busy, and that there are probably plenty of people who are in more dire situations than I am, but this waiting around and not knowing if there is anything more I can do for him just makes me crazy. I just sent in my eval for Help Me Grow, but from what you ladies have said that can take time as well, I am just so frustrated. Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: So frustrated.
Why are you going to a doctor for his evaluation?
We just went to total rehab for Davis' But his was just speech eval.
May I ask who you are going to see? There is a group associated with Harbor Behavioral that comes highly UN-recommended by a lot of people. Just an FYI. If you email me I'll fill you in on details.
I've been waiting for months and months, we started this process in October. It is now January. It isn't a quick process. I believe Hound has had to wait on things as well.
Don't stress. Monk is fine!!!!!! All kids are different, just tell yourself that. Just because he doesn't do some things that other kids his age do doesn't mean a thing. I promise.
Also, if you are planning on using Help me Grow. Don't bother with a speech eval somewhere else. Chances are, your insurance probably doesn't cover speech therapy. So you will go get this eval and be back to square 1. Help Me Grow will do a speech evaluation, then if you qualify for money or their programs, you will have paid for an outside eval that isn't even going to get used. That is what happened with us. So, the eval we had at Total Rehab was pretty much a gigantic waste of our time because we had a 2nd one a few weeks later with Help Me Grow.
Also, it is the holidays and I think the social workers, etc... with Help Me Grow are off until Jan. 3. I had to call our lady today and their message said they were closed from Dec. 24-Jan. 3.
Just to add to what Jill said since I go through help me grow, it took us about one month to get in for the eval, it was a complete eval that covered everything, not just speech. From the time of the eval they have 40 days to go over the results and get a plan in order if you do qualify for services. There is usually a wait list for speech, at the time of the eval we were able to get Jake on the speech wait list even though he hadn't officially qualified yet. There were 4 people ahead of us on the speech wait list, we ended up getting in to speech about 2 months after the eval took place. If there is no opening in the speech class they will have a early intervention specialist work with the kids until the actual speech therapist becomes available. We do speech once a week and meet with early intervention specialist 2 times a month. Once Audrey is a bit older we will be moving from the intervention specialist to having Jake in a special playgroup, then he may move on to a pre pre-school when he is 2.5 for speech and then will move on to going to pre-school at the elementary school here when he is 3 where they will continue to work on his speech.
The whole process is slow and it can be frustrating, but once you get in and get things going it'll be worth it, plus it's a free program so you won't have to worry about insurance costs. I have seen some major changes in Jake since we started, even though it took some time to see results. I'm glad that I decided to go through help me grow and have been really happy with them and the program.
We started this process the end of October and to be honest, I don't think 2 months is too bad.
We get to start speech next week because we finally got our Help Me Grow stuff in place and Davis is starting with their play group too. The play group we are going to will have a speech therapist there as well.
It is worth the wait and actually the wait went by really quickly. I think by the time we met with our assigned case worker it was into November, so really it hasn't even taken 2 months with Help Me Grow.
Just an FYI, even if you can afford private speech therapy or your insurance covers it, they too have wait lists. So even there you may have a month or two wait before a spot opens.
