How do you organize your cherished momentos?

Old greeting cards, baby shoes, movie tickets...I have several large totes of this stuff!  We have a 10 year-old so most of it's from her growing up but I know I keep too much.  I'll be sorting it all soon in an effort to thin it out.  I'd also love to be able to display/catalog and enjoy some of it but don't really know where to start.  Seems like a hugely overwhelming project.

Any ideas on how to sort, organize and display my momentos?

Re: How do you organize your cherished momentos?

  • I have a trunk that I keep things like my grandmother's embroidered pillow cases, glass objects that I am not displaying, etc.  Every once and awhile I look through it to see if there's any thing I want to display...usually on a shelf or bookcase.

You could also do scrap books with the paper stuff, then they can be displayed on a shelf.  You could also put them in pretty boxes and put the boxes on a shelf or make shadow boxes.

This is what I do with our paper things- movie tickets, etc.  Other things I have stored in a tote in the basement.

  • I use photo boxes to store cards and other momentos.  They are sturdy and stack well, and can be labeled.  And as suggested, scrapbooks or any type of photobook is a great way to keep paper things.  12x12 usually does the trick but if you have large projects that your child completed that you really want to keep, then Martha Stewart makes these 18x18 scrapbooks that would work great for that.  They are pricey so watch for a sale!
  • Ditto the scrapbooking. I just finished my parents wedding cards as a 30th anniversary gift.
  • I keep mason jars with mementos from our vacations: http://ourhumbleabowed.wordpress.com/2010/05/27/young-house-love-inspiration/

You could alter this idea and have one jar per year of life and keep the important, smaller items inside.
