If you check out ebooks from the library...
I have a Nook and I'm wondering if ebooks that I might otherwise buy are available from the library. So far the ebooks I've found from the library aren't what I'm looking for.
Do you have good luck finding good ebooks from the library? If so, which library website do you use? Any tips?
I found a few at HCLIB's digital catalog, but it seems like I'm at their mercy for what books they have there... not nearly as good as the print selection. Maybe I'm just asking for too much
Re: If you check out ebooks from the library...
I use this to search: CLICK HERE. You can search by titles that have copies available.
Since it's a relatively new technology not everything is in the right format yet and they are slowly but surely adding more and more titles to the ebook library. I have found that the really popular titles have waiting lists of patrons. They have X number of downloadable copies available at a time (much like a real book). I have my name on about 20 waiting lists right now so eventually I'll start getting the really good stuff :-) Until then I'm going with available books and arrange the list by "most popular".
If you're realllly itching to read something and don't want to wait for it you might have to buy it, much like a real book. At least there are no late fees though so that's a plus :-)
Thanks Kiz!! I looked though the supported devices, and didnt see it there, but wanted to ask you, in case you know for sure... You cant download Library books to a Kindle can you?
No. That is the reason I got the Nook. I *think* I read somewhere there is some secret program you can download and somehow get the Kindle to read them but it's super easy on the Nook so I thought that route was best. I've never even looked at the Kindle...I didn't want to "fall in love" with it so I never gave myself the chance to like it. So far I love my Nook!
I'm super excited about the entire series of Anne of Green Gables that I got for $0.99 on B&N.com :-)
The family got my MIL a Kindle for Christmas, and then my sister completely surprised me with the nook, then I upgraded to the color. UM LOVE it!!! Comparing the two I'd say Nook Color hands freaking down. I wish we would havent known about the Library thing before hand we would have gotten the nook for MIL....Owell. I am pretty excited with browsing though B&N, its hard not to just buy everything!!
Oh I know!!! It's crazy how many books you can put on it! I know I'll still read some paper books now and then (my MIL buys a LOOOOT of books and then sends them to me when she's done) but I think I'm an e-book convert for sure!!!
I was amazed at the screen quality of the colorNook! I browsed a National Geographic at the B&N store and it was stunning!
One bummer is that B&N Membership doesn't include anything e-book/Nook related. B&N employees don't even get a discount on ebook/Nook stuff!
(I cant bold on my computer) Yeah I found this to be really weird, why NOT? I hope they change that. I am not a member, but I would have paid for it on the spot if you can get discounts on ebook/nook stuff!
The lady I talked to said it's the manufacturer's decision. Bummer.
I'm not a member either and won't become one now that I know there are no discounts. I love discounts. Double bummer.
:-)
OK Nook color owners
Do you really LOVE it? I am thinking about getting one but really wonder if I will use it as much as I should. Also do you have a case for yours?
Any helpful hints?
I just love the idea that I can have 1 devise that both DH, DS, & I can read
Thanks for the advice! I wasn't using the advance search to find only available copies. That's really helpful.
Glad to see I wasn't the only one with this question
Until I found the advance search I wasn't finding anything I could check out. I sat here thinking, "I just want ONE book!!!" It's a really handy tool!
Once you download Adobe Digital Edition it's a snap to get books on the Nook! Have fun! :-)
You should go play around with one at Barnes & Noble. The screen quality is amazing!! I didn't go that route though because I figured if I wanted a device with a screen like that I would just get an iPad and have all the apps. It's obviously a personal choice.
You can get a library card from the Free Library of Philadelphia for $15 - I guess they have a large digital collection http://www.freelibrary.org/index.htm
Also, you can use this e-book management software http://calibre-ebook.com/ I think there is a way to make library books available on the Kindle with this software, but I'm not sure.
And the Nook Color can be rooted (hacked) to use like an android tablet. The Pandigital Novel can also be rooted - I really want to try hacking the Pandigital Novel, it's pretty cheap and would be fun to play around with.
We just got a 3G Nook (not color) for xmas and I like it a lot so far, but the plan was for DH and I to share it and that is NOT working out that well
I wanted the e-ink for reading, but that Pandigital Novel is looking more and more tempting because DH and I always want to read at the same time.
Enjoy your new reader!
