My DH and I live in a tiny studio apartment in Hawaii. Yes, yes, Hawaii is paradise. BUT I didn't realize how many bugs would be living with us!!! We are currently finishing up school and so we are in student married housing. It's the only affordable option for us, and yet the studio we live in sometimes feels like a breeding ground for ants (and cockroaches!). I have to keep the majority of our food shoved in our fridge just so the ants won't get to it. Everything in my cabinets has to be kept in a zip lock bag (cereal, pasta, etc.). I try to keep the house as clean as possible, especially the kitchen, but nothing seems to work! If even a crumb is left out they come flocking! Any secret tricks for keeping the ants away??
Re: Invasion of the bugs!
Vinegar and talcum power can be used to repel ants. Spray surfaces with 50/50 solution of vinegar (you can change the ratio if you find this too weak). The smell will dissipate quickly. If you see a line of ants, sprinkle some talcum powder on them. Watch were they run to exit; this is also where they enter. Make a line of talcum powder at their entrance - the ants will not cross the talcum.
As far as cockroaches, you've got to kill the colony. I really prefer non-chem methods, but on this one it's been my experience that the only sure thing is a chemical that can get to the nest. I like Combat gel; it comes in a syringe tube and you put it along walls outside and in the back of cabinets. They eat it, go back to the nest, die, get eaten, and in turn poison the nesting roaches. Works like a charm.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over!
For the ants, Terro Liquid Ant Killer. They will swarm for a few hours, then go bac to kill the ueen and nest.
If you have that many, you may want to put it in a ew places, or repeat a few times.
I'd be happy to come to Hawaii and get rid of them for you. lol.
For a natural way to ward of the roaches (I have a serious phobia of these nasty creatures), try using bay leaves. Apparently, they have a strong aversion towards them and I've scattered them in our bedroom, kitchen cabinets, bathroom, etc. You can put them in sachets, on trays, etc..just as long as the smell is potent enough for them.
Also, in terms of spray: try a brand called EcoSmart.. they are sold @ most Home Depot's, Wal-Mart's, etc. My company worked right above them in our building and I was able to test their spray.. it worked and the best part is, it's not toxic to pets, humans, etc. It smells like menthol and I actually spray it along the perimeter of bathroom, bedroom, kitchen.. They have a version for ants and another for flying creatures!
