I've noticed as I've gotten older it's getting worse. My dentist recommended a mouth guard for night wear, but my insurance wasn't going to cover much, and I wasn't sure I was going to get it in time for my insurance to cover it (we canceled my dental at the end of this year). The dentist said that it might help, but there was the possibility that it wouldn't help at all. I am dying right about now though, I'm only comfortable with my mouth open, haha, and I just look stupid!
What have you done that has helped? What pain meds do you take? My advil is not cutting it right now!
TIA!

Re: Anyone have TMJ?
I do and it's miserable! I used to have a mouthpiece from a dentist and it was $600! I have no dental coverage and I need a new one. A cheaper alternative...over the counter ones in drug stores and supercenters. They were never comfortable for me though. So I just deal as well as I can with the pain and the popping. I don't know if you experience this, but every time I yawn I'm terrified my jaw is going to get stuck that way. I can literally feel my jaw shift. I also grind my teeth and I know it's not good for my poor teeth.
As for meds I take 3 regular strength ibuprofen when it's really bad. I don't recommend it without talking to a doctor first, but mine said it's pretty much the equivalent to prescription ibuprofen. I don't do that often because I don't want any adverse effects from the ibuprofen. I used to see an oral surgeon, but again he's not covered and super expensive so I just see my family doc for pain management since he's not one to deal with TMJ.
My dentist told me that 70% of the pop. have jaw problems, but I never find people that actually do! I think he made it up, haha.
I took some advil and hung out with an ice pack for a while then a heating pack, if you ever get to a point you wanna cry, try that, it really did help! It finally quit hurting a few hours later, but the ice/heat took it down quite a few pain notches. I planned on going on a diet tomorrow anyway, so I'm going on a soft diet for a while to see if I can maybe calm it down for a while.
The mouth guard he was going to make me was only $250, maybe you can get a cheaper one? Ever heard of a chiropractor helping? I read something about that today, I thought it was weird
I know it's probably silly, but chiropractor's give me the creeps lol. I guess not them personally...just what they do. I can't stand to hear or see anyone getting an adjustment. I believe that's what they call it.
My $600 mouthpiece was from a few years ago so maybe they've gone down in price. Unless they're under like $50 I definitely can't afford one right now.
I'll have to try the ice and heat.
Yes, I have it as well and can cause lots of pain some days..
When I was having serious problems with it, I spoke to someone in my family (who is a DDS)... they said, go to the local drugstore and buy a mouth guard vs shelling out the $300 + the dentist wants to charge. I personally got mine @ Walgreen's and though it was a little odd at first, it definitely helped and maybe cost $40?
