*Vintagefix* or anyone in PA

I happened to notice you were from PA. My DH and I are going to Gettysburg and Hershey next August for a few days.  We were hoping to find a hotel around 100 or even better cheaper.  However, we are thinking of staying in between.  Could you recommend a city?  I can look at the different hotels but we want to make sure we are in a decent city or town.  We aren't looking for fancy.  TIA for any help

Re: *Vintagefix* or anyone in PA

  • I don't live in PA, but I live about 30 minutes south of Gettysburg (most interesting/coolest town ever!) and I'd definitely suggest at least staying one night at one of the 'haunted' Inn's, if you are into that kind of stuff.  The Farnsworth House Inn is really neat and offers some cool ghost tours and has a cute little tavern in it as well.  It's a bit expensive IMO, I think it's between $150-$200 a night, but I'm not sure if the rates go up or down in the summer.  Worth checking out though Smile

  • I live about 10 minutes from Hershey :)

I don't know many places on the West Shore so I can't really think a place in between.  Lancaster is a beautiful place to visit.  Try to stay out of Harrisburg.  Its a beautiful city but the crime there has been bad recently.  There is a beautiful B&B in Palmyra (Its right on the border of Hershey).  <~~~ Clicky.  They are a little over your price range but around here August is prime time for tourist season so it is average price.  Most of the hotels in Hershey are nice but like I said are expensive. If you on expedia you might be able to get a good deal.  Chris has some friends that still work at Hershey so I might be able to get you tickets for the park a lot cheaper than you pay at the park.  I will ask him if you are interested.   Sorry I couldn't help you with the in between but I will ask a few knotties that are from over there.  I am sure one of them will have a good place.  HTH a little.

We would love that if possible.  My dad is actually coming with us since he and Brian and very much the history buffs and I wanted Brian to enjoy Gettysburg with someone who can appreciate it (not that I don't but just not my thing) and it was my idea to add Hershey.   I am thinking we are leaning more toward staying closer to Gettysburg because the hotels are a bit lower in price.

  • Hello from around Philly PA, so I won't be much help! But I used to go to Gettysburg and camp with a big group of friends and family every summer! I would love to go there now since at the time I was totally not interested at all into that stuff! But I definitely suggest going on a ghost tour at night! Take lots of pictures, you might just capture something! :) I have!

When my parents go there nowadays they usually go to a camp ground and sleep in a cabin, which are usually pretty nice and aren't that expensive.

  • I haven't stayed in gettysburgh recently, but I would agree with PP, that staying outside of Hershey would be better, and cheaper. You can easily drive into Hershey to eat or to the park from outside of it. If you want to go to Lancaster, they do have some great outlet shopping and a ton of pretty reasonable hotels.

I was going to suggest Lancaster but it seemed a little out of their way.  Beautiful place though.  Great shopping, food and location.  I will have Chris call some friends and I will let you know on FB if we can get you some tickets.
