child proofing...

Ok ladies recommend your child locks for cabnets and outlets(toilets too!)

Re: child proofing...

  • we really just use baby gates to keep the kids within supervision.  I have those outlet plug-ins to keep outlets safe.

we did need an oven lock b/c my DS likes to grab the oven's handle and I was afraid he would knock himself out!

  • i didnt go nuts with child proofing, we have agate for the stairs,  the cabinets with cleaning products have a double door so i use a hair elastic on the knobs so she cant get in.  some of my outlets are childproof anyway but i didnt buy  covers for any of the other ones.  it just makes some kids want to play with them if the covers are on they want to pull them out.

  • What brands/types are pp using? There are so many to choose from...I didn't know if some work better then others.
  • I think we have Safety 1st outlet covers and I like that they are super clear, you can hardly tell they're there so its less appealing for a kid to pull it off.  I have yet to find cabinet locks that Ethan cant break or open up, he's too smart!  Other than that we have 2 gates to put up soon.  Oh, and secure any tall pieces of furniture (bookcases, china cabinet, etc.) to the wall.  My SIL told me a million times to get a fridge lock and honestly, we've never had a problem with Ethan playing in the fridge, we were always nearby anyway.  So for some things you may just wait and see what she gets into.

  • I used the outlet covers with the little button in the middle to help make taking them out easier on your fingernails.  I have 2 cabinet locks, one for under the kitchen sink and one for the bathroom vanity.  You really don't need to start childproofing until your child is pulling up on objects and starting to cruise along furniture, and almost walking.  We made our playroom nice and baby safe, and thats where he pretty much hangs out unless we can keep our eye on him 100% and let him explore the rest of the house.
  • I agree with Kelly as far as when to start the baby proofing project.  We didn't start on stuff until he was crawling around and getting into mischief; for us that was 8 months.

There are a ton of styles and brands out there, but I realized that a lot of it is trial and error.  We have 3 different kinds of locks on our cabinets b/c they were different sizes or shapes.  We have outlet blockers, but DS has never been interested in those.  And gates are a whole different ball game!  We actually had to buy/return several gates before we found the right style.  I think overall we ended up using most Safety First products for everything.
