Tina!

We're in Pittsburgh for the Winter Classic and I wanted to share this link with you. Today we were given wristbands for field level access for Capitals practice which was closed to the public (families and NHL guests only). Total right place, right time thing. It was beyond amazing and we might be on HBO 24/7 since they were filming and we were right on the glass. Anywho I took a bunch of photos and wanted to share them with you guys in case you wanted to peek! If not, disregard :)

Here you go!

I am so jealous that you are attending this big hockey event!  What an amazing experience it will be!!!!

Hope you are having a blast!  Loved the pics!

  • we are having fun except Pittsburgh is kinda boring...I might be spoiled living in DC though! :)

couldn't believe where we were yesterday. took a few moments just to breathe it in.

  • I would imagine that it take did you a few moments to get over that initial shock.  It was a big day for both of you yesterday.

Too bad Pittsburgh is kind of boring.   At least most of your time is/will be spent at the ice rink.

Do you drive/fly back to D.C. tomorrow?

  • Yup! We will drive back early and get home hopefully just after lunch!
  • It's funny b/c I came on here to page you and ask you about the game!

Thanks for sharing that link, the pics look amazing!  I want to hear all about it, the atmosphere, the fans, the food.  I'm glad your Caps won!  DH & I really hope to go next year, depending on where it is.  We'll see though.  Thanks again for sharing!

  • This might be rambly. :)

So it was awesome. Well, kinda. We got there Thursday because there was a Bears/Baby Pens AHL game (Bears are our AHL affiliate). They won. Our hotel was right near Consol. Life was good. Except Pittsburgh is boring and there is nothing to do in downtown. At all. No restaurants. We saw players going into our hotel restaurant to eat (and it wasn't much). So on the sightseeing aspect, it wasn't a great place to visit.

Then came the game. We had seen the field the day before but arriving to Heinz Sat night was awesome. Swarms of people were walking and it was pretty cool but very tense. Definitely awkward between the fans of the 2 teams and it was not easy tension.  There were easily 25-30k Caps fans - we turned out like no other. (Side note - NYE we took over about 3/5 open bars in Pittsburgh and it was ALL Caps. Made the news in Pitt and everything! haha)

We sat down and there were 97% Pens fans in our section. Even when the usher was helping us (lower level escort thing) there were Pens fans at the end of our row and a grown man (~60) shoved me as I was entering the row and told me I should go home. I was also called a tramp as I walked in to the game and we were silent. He said he chose tramp because Ovi has a back tattoo and since I'm a Caps fan I must be a whore. Nice, right?

The game atmosphere itself was great.  Very enjoyable. Watching them walk in I got goosebumps and was a bit teary. Sounds really lame, I know, but it was such an awesome moment and after meeting/chatting with some of the guys in the past, I just felt really proud of them. (Nerd!) :)

During the national anthem, Caps fans always yell "red" and "O" for Ovi during it at the right parts. The boys said they could hear it on the bench and were impressed with the Caps fans turnout and helped get them really pumped. Pens scored first and it was very loud but I would definitely say the Caps fans rivaled them. Lots of "Let's Go Caps" and "Let's Go Pens" cheers as well as our signature "C-A-P-S CAPS CAPS CAPS" cheer. Loved every minute of it. When Fehr scored because of Fleury's error people were livid and making all kinds of excuses. When he scored on the breakaway, people started leaving. I mean, 2 goals isn't too bad to come back within 5 minutes really but hey, who am I to talk. Our seats were great. Heinz Field was a great facility and we enjoyed it all immensely. It was very expensive but we would spend every penny to go back, and then some.

  • Oh my goodness, I can't believe Pens fans would say things like that.

    Wait a minute, yes I can ;)

Well aside from being called a street walker it sounds like you had a great time!  And don't worry, I would get teary, too.  I'm emotional like that.

I'm disappointed that Pittsburgh doesn't have more to offer though.  I just assumed that with it being a pretty big city the sightseeing might be good.  Oh well, I don't have a huge desire to visit anyway.

Thanks for sharing!  And Go Caps (since my Sens are sucking once again this season).
