Clever ways to store ornaments and decor?

Aside from specialty containers, anyone have any clever suggestions for packing up the Christmas stuff? I have large rubbermaid containers and don't want to spend the money on specialty containers. I saw this idea on Martha Stewart's site and thought it was a great idea for the ornaments:

Cups glued to cardboard hold the ornaments and can be stacked. She suggests egg cartons for small ornaments.

  • I also wrap each separate glass ornament in some tissue paper to help keep them from getting scratched.  I do have the specialty containers but I like the paper cup idea as well.

  • Cool idea! I use clothing boxes and tissue paper for certain ornaments but for the generic bulbs, I just use the boxes they came in.

  • I love that idea! Thanks for sharing :) I'm on a major organizing kick right now and have been wanting to organize all our Xmas stuff w/out buying more and more containers that we already have a ton of ;) I'm definitely going to use this idea!

For now, I've just been saving original boxes and using egg cartons for smaller ornaments.I also save bubble wrap to wrap ornaments.

  • I've been storing my special ornaments in smaller shoe boxes wrapped in tissue paper, so there is only six or seven ornaments per shoe box and then I store the boxes in my rubbermaid totes.  I like the shoe boxes because they offer support for stacking on top of one another in the tote.  And in between the boxes I still miscellaneous decorations.

  • I store our ornaments in a box from our area liquor store.  I kept the cardboard divider in the box (the insert that keeps the wine bottles from clinking together) and it separates the ornaments into columns!  I still wrap them in tissue so they don't scratch each other, since they are piled on top of each other.  It's a quick and free way to organize!
