Hey! I read your TTC post and wanted to let you know that I found out a few years ago I had Celiac Disease. It is way underdiagnosed! Apparently 22 years of eating gluten caused a ton of problems for me, including infertility. I am not trying to suggest you have Celiac, but your ideas about trying other things before costly treatments is very smart and makes a lot of sense. I really hope that after this pregnancy and my body finally having all the necessary hormones that I can be on a normal cycle and ovulate monthly, get AF naturally, etc. H and I would love to have more kids in the future but we probably won't do treatments again because of the cost and the chance of more multiples. I wish you and Jason all the best and I really hope this solves everything for you guys! It is awesome that you are figuring this stuff out
Re: Lauren R
Thank you! I'm definitely hoping that I'm on the right track with this way of thinking. I had no idea that Celiac Disease figured into your ttc journey, that's interesting! That would be great if you start having regular cycles in the future.
Hey, sorry I just saw this! I have had stomach problems my whole life but I didn't realize how serious it was because I was sort of used to it. But I had gas-related pains and problems all the time and just thought it was something I was eating and tried to be more careful. When I was 21-22 I started having really bad pains in my hands and feet. It was so bad I could barely move bend my fingers or toes, so I went to the doctor and was referred to a rheumatologist. The rheumatologist did a blood test for RA and after a few rounds it was positive. Next they checked my bone density and I had very weak and thin bones, comparable to an 80 year old! My iron was also dangerously low so I was sent to a gastroenterologist to see why I wasn't absorbing nutrients. The doctor immediately suspected Celiac and did the blood test, which was positive. I went gluten free for 6 months and came back for another round of testing and some things, like the iron deficiency, had cleared up. My bones can't really repair themselves and I still have RA, but now I know why I was having all these problems. Even if someone tests negative for Celiac, they can still have an intolerance to gluten that effects their digestive system. I am not sure if after a long time of gluten free my infertility issues would just clear up, but maybe that could happen. My reproductive organs were very underdeveloped but they are normal now, just not producing the right hormones. H and I could have waited it out for a while but with my bone problems it was highly recommended that we have kids early, before my bones deteriorated more and I was unable to provide sufficient calcium.
I know that was really long but it took a while to pinpoint why I was having these problems. You can definitely get the blood test for Celiac and see if it is positive, but you can also try eliminating gluten for a while and see if it helps your stomach problems. But do not eliminate gluten if you are getting the testing because that would skew the results. Either way I would suggest seeing a gastroenterologist for your stomach problems. I have had so much relief since my diagnosis!! I cannot believe what I used to go through, thinking it was normal!
Thanks for all of the information. I am so sorry about all of the issues that you've had to deal with. You are a very strong person
I am going to go see my Dr. soon. Do you think I should go to my primary? Or just go straight to a gastro? I called my primary and asked and ofcourse they said to go there. But my insurance does not require a referral, so I could do either.
I'm kinda in the same boat as you- I have had these stomach issues for a while and just thought they were normal. But they seem to be getting worse. And if they could be causing infertility I want to know asap.
