Island.......

Must have or no?

Can't decide on one or not. Right now we have ALOT of cupboard space plus walk in pantry. We also have alot of counter top so trying to decide if I want an island or not. We will have a penisula which is where the sink will be and it will open to the breakfast nook and family room. I want somewhere that DH, the kids, or company can sit at whlie I am cooking which is what the penisusla is for.  Do we leave it as a big open space in the kitchen or add an island (I am thinking a narrow one if we do, not a big square one). So is an island a must for you or no?

 Dh may kill me before this house is all drawn up. I first started off with yes for sure an island. Then I said no so he changed it, but now I am back to yes, I think it would be useful to have it when cooking.

Re: Island.......

  • what about something moveable?  Aren't those called "butcher blocks" or something??

    I do like islands when People put a pretty light fixture or hang their pans overhead.

    (I'm not much help...sorry)

  • Our kitchen is really good sized, lots of counter and cupboard space.  We have a huge island with cupboard space underneath and honestly even with all the space without it, I cannot imagine not having it.  I love it.  I work at it 98% of the time when I cook.  I love it for when we have holidays and parties, it is great to set the food up on.

    I vote YES!!!!

  • I vote yes. I hate "dead space" in a kitchen...  Plus, like Jill said, they are great for setting food up on when you have parties. We used my sisters for that all the time. We have a portable dishwasher and I drag it out like a ghetto island to put stuff on when people come over.

  • I would say either one of two things;

     An island   OR

    An extension of the counter without cupboards above, with cabinets underneath that you could put stools or something on the other side.  Like a bar..........

    We already have this in our plans. There will be enough for 4 stools for sitting and this part of the counter will be open to the family room. We also will have a breakfast nook behind it for a table.

    Ditto all of this, including being a fellow ghetto island user. :)
