How do you get rid of fruit flies?

We take the trash out and do the dishes regularly so I'm not sure how to make them go away.

Re: How do you get rid of fruit flies?

  • Clean your disposer, make sure that all food is off the counters.
  • Make a trap with an orange half (or other citrus fruit) in a bowl.  Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and poke a few holes with a toothpick.  They will find their way in but cannot find their way out!

  • We had a small glass/jar and filled it with a bit of the cider vinegar, a drop or two of dish soap and some sugar and it worked.  Smelled, but worked.  You can use Malt or red wine vinegar, but cider works best.  Not sure why they added the water below, but I got the following online:

Place a bowl filled with ? quart water, 2 Tbsp. sugar, 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar and a couple of drops of dish soap to attract the fruit flies.

  • Thanks ladies!  We'll give these a try!

  • I work at a restaurant and when we get fruit flies we pretty much clorox all the counters down, throw some of it down the sink, etc.
  • We get them at work all of the time. We put out plastic cups with 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1/4 cup Dawn dish detergent and they flock to it and almost instantly fall in and drown.

We've tried other dish detergents and nothing seems to work as well as Dawn.

  • I had a HUGE fruit fly problem a couple years ago when my neighbor left his sink on and my ceiling caved in Indifferent Besides all the suggestions above, and fly strips above their favorite cluster spots, I learned that they die on contact with -laundry detergent.- So, I'd fill the sink with some of it and they'd see water, go weee, try to dive in and die. It helped SO much. Also if you mist windex onto them they can't fly anymore and die. Good luck!
  • Ugh, these are the worst.

I was having the same problem. We used the vinegar trick and it worked great. I also purchased a garbage disposal cleaner and washing machine cleaner, since I was not sure where they are coming from. Don't leave dirty dishes or food in the sink. Put all fruit in the fridge if you can until you get rid of them. I also poured a little bit of ammonia down the drain every night and let it sit overnight.

Those suckers are hard to get rid of.
