**Bunnybean**

Can I ask you some cat questions?  I too am being largely ignored on the Pets board, and I don't have any kind of (animal)gate to blame it on.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you'll say go ahead and ask.

1)  I have these little half-moon bits on my clothes, they're vaguely claw shaped and fingernail consistency.  Do cats claws shed?

2)  My cat has rolling 3rd eyelids in both eyes, so the shelter told us to use artificial tears. She had a major eye infection when they found her, and one cloudy eye.  They're calling it the herpes virus.  Today, although we hadn't done the drops yet, her good eye was watery.  She was sneezing every half hour or so for a while.  All of that pretty much lines up with the herpes. Her affect is great, she's self-motivated to explore, runs around the house and is very affectionate.  She comes to nap on me every hour or so after running around like a nut.

Here's where I got concerned.  She does not appear to be eating much, if at all.  I think she had 1/4 of a tiny can of food in the last 24 hours.  Maybe less.  She has dry food available freely (a mix of the kitten chow crap they were feeding her and the Natural Balance we're switching her to).  There's clumps in the litter box but nothing moving out of her bowl.

PS - Her new favorite plaything is Swheat Scoop.  Thanks for the rec.  I think.

Re: **Bunnybean**

  • not bunny, but cat claws do peel like human fingernails.
  • Also not Bunny, but ditto jessa about the claws. You'll find a lot of them around her scratching post.

Is the kitty whose not eatting vomiting, having diheria or acting lethargic? If she has any combo of those things, I'd call the vet for advice. I'm not really familiar with the herpes thing, so I don't know if that would affect her appetite. But I can sympathize with trying to put drops in a cat's eye. Good times.

  • No, she's otherwise behaving normally.  That is to say, however far from lethargic you can get, there she is.  Conquering the stairs, defeating the fringes on the rug, ruthlessly hunting every dust bunny I've ever failed to vaccuum.....she's greased lightning on cocaine.  You know, for an hour, until it's time to sleep under my chin.

  • Obviously also not Bunnybean - I came to tag onto your page but I'll try to answer a little.

The kitty herpes virus is just like a kitty cold/flu. Is her nose running/crusty? It can be a good idea to wipe down the face with a warm wet washcloth a few times a day. Hold it on any crusties for a while to soften them and they should come off.

She is likely not going to eat much, especially dry, until she's better. If you add hot water to some wet food and make a little soup that can help. Even if she seems better if she's still congested it can make them eat less.

Bunnybean -- PBgate?? Do tell! I'm really bad at remembering people so I don't know what this was all about.

  • lol, she sounds like a normal kitten.

In that case, I wouldn't worry too much as long as she's still gaining weight. If it keeps up for more than a week, though, I'd call for my own peace of mind. I'm unnaturally attached to my kitties, though. At least that's what Mr. Liu tells me. Smile

Butting in:: Alisha, thanks for your nice post in my thread that I DD-ed. If you have any wisdom to impart to this clueless gal about handling divorce, I would greatly appreciate it.

Pitbullgate, in retrospect, was one of our most standout board wars (though I don't even remember exactly what it was about-- started from a post about PETA and snowballed into something about banning pitbulls???)  BB, you remember?

  • Hi doctorwho! ?Sorry I missed this--was at yoga.

I'm sorry Roxy has herpes maybe--it is fairly common from what I understand and they lead totally normal lives with it. ?Just if you get another get, you'll want to get one with herpes already. ?

The eating will probably come. ?She may not like it--cats can be really picky. ?My kittens were eating Science Diet (which is not a good food actually--full of carbs and filler) and then I tried to switch them to Pet Guard. ?THey really didn't like it. ?They loved our older cat's Spot's Stew dry food. ?I read that it's for all life stages, so I just let them eat it now. ?I know it's good stuff, and they totally eat now.

If she's going to the bathroom normally, I'd say you're okay for now. ?You may need to shop around if her food isn't doing it for her in a few days.?

Swheat scoop is great! ?I have to scoop at least twice a day for three cats because nothing covers smell (probably good so that their box is always clean), but I like it. ?We never have risk of UTIs, eye infections, etc., that clay litters can bring. ?It is flushable, but apparently bad for septic tanks. ??

  • Yes, PBgate was about BSL, which I am okay with in some situations and in some ways (keep them in good homes now, just don't breed anymore). ?

Anyway, it got way out of hand, I got mad and said some rude things, I was told I am a horrible person and some sort of Nazi, etc. ?Not awesome.?

Oh.my.gawd.  I specificially asked them about this at the rescue.  The founder/director said there was absolutely nothing to worry about when getting another cat.  Her cat has the virus, and she has 9 cats, and blah blah blah.  We were supposed to be adopting another kitten from them.  (They were supposed to call me on Tuesday about her, and they didn't return today's call either, now that I think about it.)

I wonder if it's because all of the cats there are infected?  I know it's common, but is it that common?

    Grrrgghhh......Angry

I can't wait to never have to deal with them again.

  • Well, maybe I'm wrong--I did just read it somewhere--could have been a bogus source!

But they probably have all been exposed. ?It may be a preference thing since herpes isn't a huge deal, even if a healthy cat gets it (not that you'd want to knowingly infect a healthy cat!). ?I don't know. ?I'll see if I can find more info.?

  • No no, you've been more than helpful already, I'll check it out!

    Thanks!

  • No no, its okay to get any cat! Herpes and rhino viruses in cats are just kitty flus!

Oh....supporting BSL is like... eating babies. The pets board can accept a reformed BSLer but.... taking that side is not welcome on the board. That's one I can't help you get over! Do you think people would remember? I never remember anyone, so that I don't is meaningless.

Maybe you should change your name! Stick out tongue

  • I know, I know. ?I actually eat pit bulls. ?I mean, I don't eat any other meat, just straight up barbecued pit bull.

Some people were really cool, but some were really rude.?

  • Hmmm that's not the kind of pittie love we're looking for! ;)

I doubt I was involved. I actually rarely involve myself in heated drama.

  • I remember you around, but not in that debate--no worries!
