Oh no, is this a bad idea?

I picked the weekend of Jan 29-30 for my parents to visit me here in Tampa. I just realized that's Gasparilla :( Our big outing for the weekend, believe it or not, is supposed to be a trip to Ikea on Saturday, Gasparilla day. Is it going to be wall to wall traffic to get to Ikea that day, since it's near Ybor? I'm thinking we can take 75 south to the crosstown to Ybor, instead of my normal way of 75 to I4 to Ybor. Maybe that will help with traffic? But Idk. I would hate to have to subject my parents to awful traffic.

Haha, this is me being a worry wart, but I like to have everything planned out Stick out tongue

  • I can't be of any help, since I haven't been in Tampa during Gasparilla in a long time, but I just wanted to say I would be questioning it too! My H thinks I worry about certain things too much, but I think it is being cautious. In most cases, I am a big planner too. I think the older I get, the more I want everything planned just so, whereas when I was younger I just didn't care. I think it's very respectful to your parents that you don't want their trip to spend time with you spent sitting in traffic!

Haha! It's one of those local events that you maybe do once in your life and then never again. At least that's how it was for me!

I'm the same way, I like to have everything planned out as much as possible! Especially when it involves my parents. Keeping my mom happy is key, haha.

  • The parade is along Bayshore so it is away from Ybor.... Unless they have something in Ybor later in the night, you will be fine.
  • This has nothing to do with your problem, but I thought it was a weird coincidence that my students just read a short story about Gasparilla and in the end the story told about Gasparilla Day in Tampa.  Crazy!

  • I think you'll be far enough removed that you'll be okay.

Have fun at Ikea...any purchases planned?

  • You should be OK to go the way you were originally planning but if you are concerned, just wait to leave once the parade has lready started.  Once the parade starts you won't encounter traffic since everyone attending will be parking their butts next to the route drinking and catching beads.
  • Yes, it will be pretty busy with traffic.  I'd take the Crosstown and get off right at IKEA on 22nd Street.  The earlier, the better.  My girls (who are in a krewe) have to be down there at 930am on Bayshore to start lining up but the parade is in the afternoon I believe.  Ybor is packed at night but not overly crowded in the early part of the day.  Good luck with your shopping!
  • Gasparilla goes down Bayshore to downtown Tampa. I dont think Ybor is affected at all except for the night parade...which may even be on a Thursday night.

    I think you'll be fine.

  • Thanks everyone!

Kate- nope, no purchases planned, aside from the Swedish meatballs in the cafeteria :) My parents haven't been to an Ikea for probably 20 years and it's a big treat for them to visit it, so they're looking forward to just walking around. Knowing my mom, I'm sure she'll buy a bunch of random things!
