S/O IUD's...

I saw a few posts on IUD?s and I had a question for you ladies with the IUD.

I have had mine for going on 3 years and I?ve noticed a drastic weight gain since my insertion date. Close to 80 lbs in those 3 years, since I?ve noticed the weight gain I?ve been eating healthier and doing more exercise but cant drop the weight to save my life. I?m thinking about removal before the 5 years.

Have any of you experienced the same issue?

Re: S/O IUD's...

  • I had the non-hormonal IUD so I didn't have that side effect. I think anything that uses hormones has the possibility for weight gain.
  • This is one of several reasons I opted for Paragard instead of Mirena.  I'll take heavier periods over the side effects I get from hormones any day of the week.

  • I really wish I was better informed or did better research!

I don?t remember the last time I had period, right now I wouldn?t hate them to get back down to my weight before the IUD.

    Ignorant vain me! L

  • You should also get your thyroid checked.  That much weight gain is a bit suspect and you may have a thyroid disfunction.

Time for a visit to the OBGYN!

I?ve had my thyroid checked s couple times, everytime they say it?s normal. However I just started seeing a new doc, should get some labs for giggles.

  • I have a non-hormonal IUD, so no weight gain (I have been using a copper IUD for almost 6 years).

I have read that weight gain (even substantial gain) is a possible side effect of Mirena, as it is with any hormonal birth control.

  • I had two experiences with the IUD (Mirena).  The first time was after my first was born.  I think she was one or two when I got it.  Maybe older.  I had little to no problems with it.  None of the weight gain, none of the hair loss, etc.

I had it taken out to TTC our second.  After he was born (I think at 6 or 8 weeks old), I had another inserted.  This was a bad experience.

Lots of weight gain, unable to lose it.  I started losing hair in handfuls.  I also had issues with depression that my OB and psych thought was amplified from the IUD and the hormones.

There are TONS of side effects that they don't talk about with you.  It all depends on how fast you absorb the hormones.  I finally got it removed after PPD turned to PPP at the advice of both doctors (not that the IUD caused it, because it didn't, but it sure as heck didn't help).

    HTH.

  • I've not had any problems with my Mirena, but I'm coming off of 5 1/2 years of DepoProvera. (Which came with a significant weight gain.)

When reading about the side effects, I saw the weight gain was a possibility. I've only had mine for about two months, but I've maintained.  I haven't lost, which I really need to, but I haven't gained any.

I would go with PP and try Paraguard.  Going hormone-free might be better for you.

  • I have had weight gain.  I have mostly attributed it to a sedentary job overnight (which makes me sick in itself) but I suppose some could be do to the IUD.  I am not sure.  It was a question I asked my OB before I put it in and she assured me that it didn't have that effect...yeah right!  I have seen an increase in facial hair growth, which is what really drives me bonkers!

  • Me too! I've had mine for 2 years and have put on about 50lbs. The thing that made me most concerned was the type of fat I was developing. I've always been bigger around the middle (and eveywhere!) but my tummy was never jiggly type fat. It was always pretty firm. I'm scheduled to have it removed tomorrow. And now that I think about it, facial hair has been coming in faster than before, way more trips to go get it waxed :(

Hopefully this will help us lose a few pounds.

Tell me how that goes pain wise - because I'm really thinking about getting an early removal. I just hate to get it out before the 5 years because I had to spend $1000 out of pocket for incretion. But I hate all this extra weight?. I?m in a pickle.
