Photoshop for Mac??

I'm new at photography and my Mac, so I'll apologize in advance for the dumb questions....

I see a lot of black and white pictures with just certain parts in color and everyone says they do it in photoshop.  Do i need photoshop for my mac?  I'm a basic editor in iphoto and just click the "enhance" button to my photos, but I'd really like to start getting a little more involved, but everyone seems to use photoshop.  Just didn't know if I need to buy a Mac version or if there is something on the Mac I could use that would be similar and user friendly?? I'm far from pro and don't have the time and patience to have to sit for hours to figure something out.

 Thanks!!

Re: Photoshop for Mac??

  • Have you looked at Aperture?  It's the upgrade from iPhoto on Macs.  It might do what you want, but I'm not sure.
  • Save the $ and download GIMP! It is free! I love it!

Here is the tutorial for you to do the B&W with certain parts color:

  • You could get photoshop elements for the mac. But are you sure you want to do selective coloring?
  • I'm not sure if there's an easier way to do it in Photoshop, but the way I learned how to do it was duplicate the layer, apply a color overlay that's black with the blend mode set to "color" onto the top layer and then add a mask onto it and color in the area you want to be color.

I would say try Gimp, but Photoshop will take work to learn.

Couldn't agree more!  Selective coloring is tacky, I cringe every time I see it!

  • No, I'm not sure I want to do the selective coloring, I was just trying to find a program to do some editing.  I normally just use the one click "enhance" on my Mac, but thought I'd try to get more into it. Although, Photoshop sounds really involved and not worth my time at this point! ha.    I don't have the time or patience to learn it.

So, no new editing for me (including selective coloring).....
